It seems odd that the city would cancel trash collection all together when the US mail and parcel package deliveries are still providing daily service.
No mail delivery in my neighborhood for three days. It's all good, but I don't think USPS serivce goes uninterrupted these days.
It seems odd that the city would cancel trash collection all together when the US mail and parcel package deliveries are still providing daily service. In addition, with the new robotic arm collection trucks the driver rarely has to be working outside the heated vehicle. Maybe the union waste collection employees won't work below a certain temperature.
I think that many of the waste collectors have also been put on mandatory overtime to deal with the snow, so there is probably some cost (and safety) management going on there. I expected it would be cancelled, I live in Cary and was glad to find it wasn't.
Are you sure they are unionized? I did a search and could not come up with anything to substantiate that. I just don't know, so I'm Asking.
The Raleigh folks aren't union it's an outside company the city contracts with I believe. That's the way government should run things.
That being said I'm in a heavily unionized industry and myself have been union since 2005. The hatred against unions is misplaced - the companies that pay more get better quality employees, the ones that pay less (and are still union) give the better employees and union a bad name.
Both of these came from the article you (Starglow) referenced.
