I was in line at Home Depot the other day and saw a water saving package kit; I don't remember who put it together, but it had a shower head, some aerators for faucets and maybe some other items. I think it was about $10.
I briefly considered picking one up, but then I wondered if those things were already in my new house.
It's a KB, who aren't exactly known as being the greenest builders on the block. I've spent over a hundred already replacing every one of the cheap, clear 65W incandescent builder grade light bulbs with compact fluorescents; but who knows? Maybe there are codes in place for new contruction with regard to water flow?
Is there a good way to test your faucets? Say, how long it takes to fill a specific sized container?
I remember John saying the shower heads are low flow but I think even within low flow there are some that are better than others and some that will barely give you any water at all (I've had all ranges). I know the city of Durham sells low flow shower heads for $2-3?? Something around there because of the drought situation however I'm not sure where you go to get them... And I'm really not sure about faucets.
I saw that kit at Home Despot too, and I thought "how dare they charge so much for *that*"? Yes, you can get a low-flow showerhead at the Durham water department. We have one and it is GREAT! It has a massage setting which really helps beat the shampoo out of your hair (a common problem with low-flow showerheads). Plus, it feels nice.
They also have aerators for your sinks which restrict waterflow. I guess those would be good if you have kids who can't control the urge to always turn the tap on to the "Niagara" setting. For the rest of us, taps are easily controlled and I would find the aerators too restricting....sometimes you want to fill the Brita pitcher in something less than 5 minutes...
You could try taking a very close look at the showerheads you've got already. The GPM should be marked on them in very tiny writing. Ours are. Your faucet aerators might be too. Again, ours are.
any faucet made in the USA in the last several years is mandated under 2.5 gallons per minute.
