Here we go, time for first snow thread 2017! How much snow do you think the Raleigh area will get this Saturday, January 7th? Local weather not saying much as usual. Have seen Euro model predicting between 2"-6" so far?
"There's a lot of uncertainty," Johnson said. "We don't have a lot of confidence in what exactly, if anything, would fall this weekend. We are confident it will be very cold this weekend."
The system that could bring snow is still over the Pacific Ocean off the Oregon coast, he said, so there hasn't been an opportunity to gather much information on it yet. Also, it's unclear where a low-pressure system will develop off the Southeast coast and how it will move, he said.
If the low is farther south, North Carolina might not get any precipitation, Johnson said. If it tracks farther to the west, he said, snow could be limited to the North Carolina mountains, while the Triangle would see only rain.
"A lot of question marks. We'll continue to watch this over the next couple of days," he said.
Back in 2007, the very first snow day my kids enjoyed we woke to bright sunshine and a dry lawn. My youngest peaked suspiciously out the window certain his parents had gotten confused about school being cancelled (we had just moved from Long Island where 6" of accumulation didn't close anything).
It's not how much falls that really matters, it's how much the meteorologists think is going to fall; that's what drives the herd.
