Worrying about image of the Triangle ??? Unbelieveable!
Personally I don't think it is clear whether it is gang related or not. But it is no good to hide the problem.
What, I should want it to have a BAD image???
My point in that post was that if the guys acted independently, then why artifically inflate the gang problems that are in the area. If they did act as part of the gang, then, that's different. Otherwise it's misleading. I mean come on, this is a good discussion but let's at least hotly debate over accurate information
It's no good to hide the problem - but do you really see gang violence as such a problem here that we all need to be alarmed about it? I don't, and I live in Durham, which people think is like the wild west.

The problem is crime and criminals.
Some numbers here ,
"Late last year, Durham officials documented nearly 1,000 gang members in 30 gangs. Police say gangs in Durham accounted for 10 percent of robberies in the first six months of last year and 14 percent of aggravated assaults. "

I don't want to turn this thread into a Durham gang issue anymore than it already is. Also, I think you're not really reading my posts. I'm not disputing that there are gangs there. I'm saying, let's not inflate the threat of gangs in Durham because nobody told me I need to go practice at a shooting range and wear a flak jacket here.
Your logic is flawed - you're quoting a statement that gangs accounted for 10 percent of robberies, etc. I was talking about the threat of gangs to the general public. As of yet I haven't been robbed. Once I saw a guy threaten to beat up a convenience store clerk.
(have you guys always lived in completely crime-free areas? This gang stuff...you guys are totally overblowing the issue IMO and sensationalizing the murder.)

Talk about flawed logic. You haven't been robbed yet so there is no threat to the general public???
Never lived in a crime-free area, but I've also never lived somewhere that just treated murders like this as acceptable.
So, it is not just about Durham. Frankly, I don't enjoy discussing the gang problem. Sorry for tarnishing the image of the Triangle where I choose to live.
We are much better off discussing the issue now while the problem is in its infancy than we'd be if we try to sweep it under the rug and ignore it. It isn't going to go away and is only going to get worse unless we are aggressive in cracking down on it. I was very encouraged to see the Judge make the comments he made.
You can't honestly believe that's what I'm saying.
In regards to the issue of gangs not being a thread to the general public, then I'm really not sure what you are saying other than what you posted and I quoted. What is the point of stating that you haven't been robbed?
Chapel Hill is only 7 miles from Durham. Doesn't really matter where these guys drove to commit this latest crime. The issue is the cesspool that is certain areas of Durham. You clean that up and you crack down on the gangs there and things get better. Nothing you do in Chapel Hill is going to make much of a difference.

The point of me posting is I live there and I don't think you do. So, I probably know a little bit more.
The issue is the cesspool that is certain areas of Durham? No, that's not the issue. The crime did not happen in Durham. The point is that crime can happen anywhere. Nowhere are you free from the threat of violent crime. That IS the point.
