Smithfields is pretty darned good and quite a bit meatier than Bojangles, in my humble opinion. Just avoid Smithfields BBQ. It's roadkill.

I had Smithfield's fried chicken for the first time last week and I was fairly impressed.

Smithfields is good.
If you want "soul-food" genre, then try Joyce's Family Restaurant (buffet) in Fuquay.

If you want the real deal, then drive to Thunderbird Inn at the intersection of I95 and US52 (South Carolina), Fullers in Fayetteville, or I hear Casey's in Wilmington is good too....

Smithfields is pretty good......but we have someone visiting from NY and that's the place we're recommending? Beasley's is good enough - you won't be disappointed haha

Smithfield's... Bojangles is a lot easier to find, though.

We did the same "research" when we moved down here from CT.

You could do Dame's Chicken & Waffles in Durham if you're looking for something a little different.

If you want "upscale" fried chicken, my vote is for Dame's Chicken & Waffles. If you want good, "everyday" fried chicken, Smithfields Chicken 'N Bar-B-Q is actually quite good.

Yes! Soo Cafe has delicious Korean fried chicken. It's a complete hole-in-the-wall, but the chicken is sooo good.

Bojangles is great but we actually prefer Harris teeter fried chicken. And it's cheap.
