Maybe NC needs laws regarding cell phone usage in vehicles. I see more people here than anywhere else with their heads down looking/messing at/with their phones. And that is not just at lights, it is driving down roads and freeways.
Texting and surfing the internet while driving is illegal in NC, but the law is impossible to enforce because officers can't search your phone without a warrant from a judge and all other activities are more or less legal. Chapel Hill tried to outright ban cell phones while driving but state courts struck it down.

How is it that other states can have much stricter laws regarding cell phone usage? It really is ridiculous!
Maybe there should be mandatory driver's education classes every few years to get your license renewed, or additional testing to renew your license.
I do like that idea. When you think about the fact that you don't really have to show anyone that you know how to drive a car after the age of 16 is kind of crazy.
It's easy to spend 20 minutes memorizing the road signs before you take your test to renew your license. Many simple traffic laws that you are taught during driver's ed can easily be forgotten within a year, let alone the stuff you forget after 20 or 30 years of driving. Maybe once a decade you should be able to prove you still can pass a road test.
Sorry but you are assuming that I assume Actually we may need to hire more officers who are both understanding and observant who could ease us into better compliance.
well, let's say each officer costs $70K a year (which is probably pretty accurate given the starting pay + benefits+ overhead).
As of 2011, wee had 600 traffic lights in Raleigh. Surely that number has only increased.
Let's say we hire 1 cop for every 6 lights (cause you also want to catch the lane-weavers, etc).
100 extra cops at $70K is $7,000,000. That alone is almost a 1% budget increase. Where's that money coming from? Citations? I looked at the budget and don't see any line item for citation revenue, but it may be there.
I'd be over the moon if the triangle police departments could assign a task force to ticket for burnt out brake lights. I say this somewhat in jest, but honestly I've never seen so many in my life.

I doubt they get paid that much as they are usually poorly paid. But I would pay more taxes for this. A 1% budget increase? For every $1000 we pay in taxes that would only be ten dollars. Plus the fines could return some of the money spent as well.

you've gotta take into account total compensation rather than just what shows up in the paycheck.......
