Why it matters: The use of face coverings could stop people who have the virus, whether they have symptoms or not, from spreading it further when they go out in public.
As researchers learn more about the virus, it's becoming apparent that asymptomatic carriers are likely contributing to its spread.
The guidance is a significant change in messaging from the Trump administration, which initially advised against healthy people using masks.
What they're saying: "The CDC is recommending that Americans wear a basic cloth or a fabric mask that can be purchased online or made at home," Trump said on Friday.
"I'm choosing not to do it, but some people want to do it and that's okay ... it's only a recommendation, it's voluntary."
Trump said the White House is not advising that Americans use surgical grade or medical grade masks, since "medical protective gear must be preserved for the front line workers."
The recommendation does not replace CDC guidance on social distancing, Trump said.

I know for a fact I am not infected because I have rigorously quarantined myself/total social distancing for the entire month of March and now into April, with the only human contact being 6+ ft away from others in a grocery store twice, and 8ft away from a masked, gloved, and plexiglass barriered gas station employee today. Neighbors I've maintained a 20 to 30ft distance. Plus, with the pollen storm the last 3 weeks, I've opted to stay inside most of the time.
Left the house today for the first time since Monday for 10 minutes to get some takeout. 55 in Cary was just a normal day as far as traffic volume goes. Amazingly everyone still seemed like they were in a rush.
Why are people not staying home, and where are they going?
It is taking long time for people to get ahold of the seriousness of the issue.
I have a friend I take to dialysis every other day and she is in her 70s and most of the people in dialysis are elderly so only the patients and workers are allowed in the clinic. Every one is temperature tested and given a mask before entering but not those delivering patients. I asked why not/ and they said liability issues, I'm going, seems to me care givers should be as important as the patient in this case.
Like I said, it was typical pre-covid volume. These people were not all coming from work I can assure you of that.
I went to the grocery store during rush hour yesterday and there was a noticeable decrease in traffic (I live near North Hills) so maybe it varies from area to area.
Other than the closings, etc I can't tell any difference in traffic or anything
else for that matter? Maybe it will start slowing down soon?
You cray cray. I work 8-5 in RTP and haven't been in traffic for weeks. The roads aren't desolate and empty like pictures from some cities, but no jams. More like a Sunday evening or something. I live near North Hills and same thing - no traffic jams for weeks
