I agree with you. I don't go to Crabtree very often because I live on the other side of the triangle, but every time I go to either South point or Crabtree, the mall's packed. I'd be interested to look at the statistics, but I bet the rate at which mall closures are happening has slowed down. There were too many malls at one point, but the lesser malls have already bit the dust. The flagship malls seem to be doing just fine. There's plenty of people who like them.
I also agree. I grew up in the area and have been going to Crabtree for many, many years. There were a few years when I didn't go that often when my kids were younger, but now that my daughter is 14, we go there pretty frequently. It's always busy. She and her friends love going to the mall the same way I did when I was a teenager. Crabtree has a ton of stores that appeal to that age group. And it's still an attractive mall with plenty of restaurant choices and some higher end stores for adult. I don't see it going anywhere.

Yeah...I've been hearing for a decade that they're going the way of the Dodo because "people shop online now." But...my Grandmother ordered lots of stuff from the Sears catalog and Lands End and others. Amazon isn't all that different. I'm a millennial and I remember the Sears catalog that had everything from activewear to archery equipment. Just like Walmart didn't reinvent the wheel, neither did Amazon, they just made one that works a bit better.
I think that malls are like any other commercial real estate...Apartment housing or retail centers or office space. Some are well managed in desirable locations, others not so much.
I'm 40(oldest millennial) and I'd rather shop for things. In person. I like to see the actual colors of things that might not come thru , when shown online. Plus I like to feel and handle objects especially if spending over 50 for the item. Recently I was at a store I won't name and saw some. Beautiful Matte Black silverware. When I touched it the fork prongs were so flemsy.. (almost felt like it was barley a step up from the plastic ones u get at KFC) lol.. I definitely would of been disappointed if I had ordered that silverware set online and those showed up.. I do think the malls that are left have weathered the Purge. They have figured out just the right mix of shopping, dinning and entertainment to survive. I'm in Greensboro so I go to Haned Mall in Winston mostly. That mall still needs some additional TLC but I think it will make it. As long as they have more chain retail stores then one off "-mom and pop" independent stores . I think that's what brings a malls look down. When it's tons of independent stores that's not a name brand.
Our family is a mix - we get a package or two a day from Amazon but also find it easier to buy things like clothes in person. It's also nice to get out of the house once in a while and do some browsing in person.
Having a small number of signature malls like Southpoint or Crabtree makes sense. Having the smaller satellite malls like Carytown, Northgate, or University doesn't at this point.
