A big victory it was and an unimportant loss last night. Somehow (I don't understand how) the Canes clinched a playoff spot with the loss of Florida to Toronto.

Arithmetic, it is.
Ganes can lose all their remaining games and another team can win theirs, and the worst the Canes will finish is 2nd wild card.
Arithmetic, not desirable.
So, they have clinched a post-season berth with 12 games left in the regular season.
Cool beans, compared to seasons past where they took it right down to the wire..
Well after the Detroit and Tampa fiasco the Canes get back to back wins.
Like last season the team is kind of limping over the 82-game finish line. Some bad games and good games, unfortunately a devastating injury to deal with.
Ottawa on Tuesday night will be interesting. They still have a slim chance of the playoffs.
What makes the absence of Svechnikov and Pacioretty especially difficult is that neither Anderson nor Raanta nor Kotchetkov is having a great season. All three have a save percentage in the .904-.910 range. Fortunately the Canes lead the entire league in shots allowed per game, and that compensates for good-but-not-great goaltending. Nevertheless, with less scoring I think it's crucial that one of the goalies gets hot during the playoffs.
