Grinding out victory and overcoming poor play is hardly a recipe for playoff success, methinks.
Getting through the regular season and winning the Metro will be a nail-biter the rest of the way.
OTOH, the Devils have to be wondering what it will take to pass the Canes, who seem to match them step by step when they have to win to maintain 1st place.
Ugh, losing outright to Buffalo was a missed chance for the Devils to be nearly put away. Considering they play Boston tonight, chances were good the lead could have expanded to 3 points... and the Devils would only have two games left (to Carolina's three).
This team seems to be getting sluggish at a bad time.

The way they've played the last 6 games, a 1st round exit almost seems likely.
the team is kind of limping over the 82-game finish line
Indeed. Disappointing. Maybe a 50-50 chance at winning round one, given home ice advantage... unless the team wakes up or one of the goalies starts stealing games.

The NY Rangers are not yet mathematically eliminated from winning the Metro.
Canes could end up without home ice if they just lose out. I would like to say that is quite far-fetched, but now we just have to watch the last few games unfold.
It stinks to now be dependent on Devils and Rangers stumbling, without much confidence in winning a couple of the last 3 games.
