22 Mass Shootings. 374 Dead. Here's Where the Guns Came From

Uvalde? The shooter legally purchased an AR-style rifle used in taking 21 lives. Parkland? 17 killed using an M&P 15 rifle. And the list goes on. So, yeah, adding laws to control the easy purchase of assault weapons and guns would be a great first step in reducing the mass shootings plaguing the US in ways that don't seem to affect other parts of the world at the same rate. What's different? One key difference is those countries have stricter gun laws.
I didn't know we were looking only at "mass shootings". I put that in quotes because there are plenty of mass shootings that occur that are never covered by the media.

These types of shootings are such a tiny percentage. How many shootings do we have per week just here in the Triangle? Durham alone has something like 800-1k a year, that's like 15 per week just in Durham. I feel pretty confident saying that I don't believe most shootings in Durham are with legally obtained guns.

Ha. Yes, quite aware. Sadly, just one example of legally obtained weapons used in mass killing.

Hmmm... Common ground on addressing the #1 cause of child death will be elusive.

Is 18 considered an adult or is it not?

I've owned semi-autos since I was 12. Never shot anybody. Shocking I know.

It's kind of hard to ignore that elephant in the room when talking about gun violence, especially when so many children are killed in their schools.

Nearly 53 people are killed each day by a firearm in the US, which is nearly 20x more than in the UK, and over 6x in Australia. The US also has, by far, the largest number of guns per capita in the world; 2x more than #2, Yemen, and over 3x more than any other country in the world. You seem to believe that these statistics are somehow unrelated; I don't.

I was just thinking if the Mother were available for interviewing she would consider the gun(s) used by her son as illegally obtained from her collection. Since he shot her too, it might be a certainty.

Since 2018 just over 1000 children have been wounded or killed by guns in schools. This is horrible and most definitely on the rise, but you really think THIS is the elephant in the room when it comes to guns?

I disagree.

Of course. Leaders of other countries (Canada's early history is similar to the US) clearly saw this decades ago and have continued to introduce more restrictions.

Sure is a lotta poop here - I guess we need to either shoot or write laws against all of those elephants.

Or reduce the posting rights for the top CD posters.

"Considered an Adult?"
Yes. No. Maybe So...

A review:
Numerous neurological studies indicate, and psychologists and psychiatrists overwhelmingly agree on a point that insurance companies and car rental companies have long recognized in risk assessments.
The human brain development is generally not complete well into the mid-20s age range,
That is why so many restrictions are in place on people younger than 25, and many more on people younger than 21.
They just are not ready for full adult responsibilities.
An 18-year-old:
-Cannot rent a car in most states.
-Can rent a car in a few states and pays a huge daily surcharge for that privilege.
-Cannot drive commercial vehicles in interstate commerce, even with a Commercial Drivers License.
-Cannot operate a vehicle carrying hazardous materials.
-Cannot purchase or consume alcohol legally.
-Cannot gamble in a casino in nearly all states.
-Cannot fly a commercial airliner.
-Cannot buy weed in states where it is decriminalized.
-Cannot buy beer or cigarettes.

But!
The NRA and The Gun Lobby and the legislators whose souls have been purchased with many millions of NRA dollars have supported allowing an 18-year-old like Salvador Ramos acquire 2 semiautomatic weapons, 58 magazines, 1675 or more rounds of ammunition, tactical gear, etc.
Then there’s 18-year-old Payton Gendron, with 30 round magazines to fit his modified AR15-style weapon.

Look at all the stuff an 18 year old youth with a brain that is not fully developed, is restricted from doing.
Look at the toll of not restricting just those two 18-year-olds.
“Adults?” By what measure?

So?
Make it relevant to the terrible gun violence death tolls in America.
FWIW, I have never owned semi-automatic weapons. I have never shot anybody.
