The other late-night challenge in Raleigh wass finding gas.

I found it bewildering that there are three or four gas stations at 40@Jones Sausage Road and they all shutter up by 10 even on weekends. The one place around there you can go is an Exxon station on Poole near 440. Closer to downtown heading south I think there's one on South Saunders (BP?) that is open until midnight or 1. I basically just started making sure I had gas to get wherever I was going at night.
I'm starting to think you're trolling. No gas stations open after 10? Get real.

They will move to where there is a glut of inexpensive or undesirable housing: the suburbs. It is already happening in some areas. The Next Slum?

But I have no doubt that some affordable housing will remain in the area, but hopefully it will be improved affordable housing instead of properties owned by greedy slumlords who don't care about the neighborhood.

You got that right. Affordable housing like this (http://www.newsobserver.com/news/wake/raleigh/story/1103751.html - broken link) doesn't do anybody any good.

So where are those literally hundreds of late-night restaurants again? We've already spotted you Waffle House and Denny's. Two down, >198 to go. You said "hundreds."

And I didn't say there were none open. Just not many, and some of them are in some rather borderline areas. But I got gas when I needed to, because I'm cool like that.

And yes, I am a troll. I live under a bridge.

I can't speak for JC, but I have found my fair share of all night gas stations in Raleigh. Plenty along Glenwood Avenue and on my way up Atlantice Avenue. They aren't on every corner, but enough to do in a pinch. I get pretty good mileage out of my rice burner so I don't find myself in situations where I am looking around for one on E too often. I'll agree that there isn't a Huge selection of all night places in Raleigh, but the number of places there are grows with every passing month. It has probably changed a lot since you last visited.

Speaking of gas stations.....once when I was driving from Richmond, VA to Long Island I took the Lincoln Tunnel to enter Manhattan on my way out to LI. Traffic was back up bumper to bumper in the tunnel. A three minute trip through the tunnel turned into 20 minutes of Hell. My car was running on fumes and the gas light turned on while I sat motionless in the tunnel. I was convinced I was going to end up as the jughead who ran out of gas and blocked up traffic in the Lincoln Tunnel. When I finally made it out of the tunnel I cruised the streets of Manhattan searching for a Gas Station. Think about it ..... How many gas stations have you ever seen in NYC? I’ll tell you this, they are about as common as a leprechaun riding a unicorn!

Most restaurants are open after 10pm. After 1 or 2 am? Now that's another story. Just because your favorite eating spots just so happens to close early, does not mean every restaurant in Raleigh closes at 10. You must live in a small town around Raleigh, because most of the locations you've visited are on the very fringes of Raleigh. Most of those places were not even in the city limits 6-7 years ago. Try migrating further in toward the real areas of Raleigh, and don't be afraid to open up to other food options.

Hopefully a lot of them will take pride in the revitalization and be among those cleaning the area up. But if they were part of the problem that let the areas get run down and crime/drug infested, I don't really care where they go, as long as the taxpayer isn't footing the bill.

Actually - you know, you'd pick up on little tidbits like this if you read stuff before you post - I live in a far out exurb of Raleigh about 1,250 miles southwest of downtown called Houston. Small one-stoplight town of ~2M and out in the sticks we've got maybe 3-4M more. And God knows there's nothing good to eat here, and that the sophisticated cuisine of Raleigh was just over my head.

Now I haven't been to Raleigh in about a year and a half. I explained all that earlier, but I gather you missed that. I am mostly familiar with S/SE Raleigh - I used to come out of WakeMed around 11, 11:30 or so. Considering that's one of the few places in Raleigh where a significant number of people actually work around the clock (not to mention you frequently have large crowds coming out from shows at Walnut Creek) I guess my expectations were a little higher.

And I suppose you're not going to give any specific suggestions on where to eat late in Raleigh, since you seem to be in the know about untold hundreds of spots around the city. Let me know so I'm not eating a three-hour-old Quarter Pounder with Cheese at midnight next time I find myself around there. Share some info, wouldya?

There used to be a Miami Subs over near WakeMed. Not sure if it is still there (I think it is, but many of the local ones became Papa Lou's). Was a decent late night option.
