There is woods and a creek behind my lot too and the neighborhood kids have made paths/shortcuts all thru it and makeshift bridges to get over the creek. No one seems to mind, and it's common area too.

Personally I think it's selfish to destroy natural habitats for the sake of a "view". Just my opinion.

It seems that the main point is being overlooked. A few people have brought it up (that means you, Vicki) already, but it doesn't seem as you have realized the importance of this point:

No matter what the laws are concerning the buffer areas that we are all discussing, even if you could do what you really want to do, it's not your property!

I would think a true southern gentleman would understand that there are reasons for all living things, even if he doesn't agree with those living things or thinks that those living things need to be destroyed only for his personal gain. How long has that area remained and grown that way? If it hasn't been modified, it obviously holds an importance to the owner of that property.

I would think a true southern gentleman would appreciate the view that Mother Earth has given him, especially since she owns the land more than he does.
