I was thrilled when my new Trane HVAC system came with a very simple thermostat. It isn't even programmable, but has giant LED numbers that are easy to see, and a button to raise or lower the temperature. That's all I want in a thermostat.
Best of all, the power company can't control the temperature inside your home, as is now a problem in some areas. They don't know/care whether someone has medical conditions requiring a certain level of comfort. If I bought a home with one, I would replace at once.

Wait until January, we'll see how cold your A/C (recently repaired) gets, too! 35F is ok?

Now, think it's a good idea to relinquish your environmental control to an ahole like me?
If someone has such skills and time to do this, they sure as hell will not be swinging by some random house and messing with a thermostat, lol.

Every breach so far was nothing more than compromised/weak passwords.

Power company cannot now, only if a person opts in and allows them and, does the power company still need to install software or use their own thermostat?

At that, the smart thermostats still operate as normal not connected to wifi.

Yeah. I'm trying to figure out why Heidi thinks it's a "problem" when the customer is required to voluntarily (at least for now) opt-in. My oldest son has done so, we haven't. The electric company lost interest in us when its reps found out we don't have central air.

We replaced our original1956 thermostat before listing. I'm pretty sure that sold our house, despite the 1978 furnace.

No. People expect a working thermostat. It's not an upgrade that will add to home value. It's maintenance at best.

We have geothermal heating and cooling--even that expensive system doesn't cause our appraisal to rise in our area.

True, but you likely got some very nice tax breaks for it, though.

I would consider that a benefit, but not a requirement. Still won't affect the value of the home in any appreciable manner IMHO.

They may make the buyer run for the hills.

Ha, if a $50K swimming pool will not increase the property value, what makes you think a $100 thermostat will. I have two and love them because I control them with my phone. I also love the eight-station sprinkler controlled by my phone and adds nothing to the value.
