I have been fantasizing for a very long time about a lakeside or riverside retreat. I want to be in a natural setting; quiet, simple. Low income factor; divorced senior lady. Rough living is not a problem. Been there.
I don't want to begin a serious process right now nor to make an agent put any work in it yet.
Description of my ideal:
Thinking about a strip plot about 3000+ sq ft ? with a livable old shack cabin/bunkhouse on site (maybe 12x12, 12 x20ft) with an outhouse and firewood cooker or pot belly/Franklin stove. Power not required. Access to water from a well with a hand pump or municipal line nearby, or lake water tap. Easy access to lake or river. Space for a garden.
Any suggestions on how to find such an opportunity? Have you run into people who want to lease out or offer rent free to house sit a lake cabin? Advice?
An option may be to become an "environmental steward" on BLM land. This way, you could be in a desolate area, with zero human contact, and get paid to do so. You'd oversee the land/waters from an environmental standpoint. Just think: "Pioneer Life."

My mom bought such a place. 1919 build. 2 horse stall. Coastal home, with nearby lake, and river. It is large dormer when remodelled, 1400 sq. It came with a woodburning stove/oven, an upstairs potbelly, a franklin (soon replaced with oil box burner, then a barrel fireplace), stone fireplace (later installed a insert). Ice box was an cubby box cut into the studs exposed into the outside. It did have electricity 50-75amp (?), post wiring , running water hot and cold water, toilet No insulation. Cold when you entered, But 2 hours later when you got every possible heat source going, it was an oven. 1970. Remodelled 1974. Needs to be remodeled again, if my sister ever gets organized.
As recently as 2008, you could have found something close to what you want. But since Airbnb and easy vacation rentals, the "shacks" have been gobbled-up, remodelled, and turned into upscale 2nd homes. Just as Mom, did in 1970.
What you want, is Not going to happen, ever again.

All the old cabins on waterfront have been bought up, torn down, and replaced with vacation homes. You'll really need to get out in the boondocks (hours from major highway access) to find what you're looking for.
Of course there are still some unflipped shacks out there. My husband was Jonesing for one that had only boat access a couple of years ago.
I think you'd have to narrow your search area and work with local realtors to find them.
