Now that all the residential homes are advertised using the phrase “primary bedroom” instead of master bedroom, what do consumers think?
I personally think that it was totally unnecessary. We have master planned communities. Master chefs. Master of ceremonies. 99% of USA english speakers know the definition.
And a primary bedroom implies it is either the first used, or the parental sleep room, or the couple’s private space, or perhaps the solo owner’s largest bedroom.
But even those identities could be wrong. For example friends of mine chose a smaller bedroom for the couple because they wanted to wake up to their ocean view. The master bedroom is elsewhere. Ditto parents who gave the twins their master bedroom when they became students needing in room study desks.
Yeah this is a rant. But I have never heard legit arguments only theoretically valued ones. What do people in real estate honestly think? And is it worth confusingly modifying etymology of language?
ToMAYto, toMAHto? How the owners choose to allocate the bedrooms doesn't matter as to what term to use for the main bedroom, the largest one. If they give the largest one to the kids to share, it will still be the "main" one, the "primary", the whatever, in terms of architectural design. It's a design term. It doesn't necessarily dictate how to use the room. That's up to the residents.
Most consumers don't care. My older clients call it the master and ask for a "master on the main" and that is fine. Younger people call it the primary bedroom. I'm not going to correct an 80-year-old on their word choice after they have been calling it that forever. I'm fine calling it the primary bedroom. I'm fine calling it the master if that is what my clients call it.

I think it's stupid. It's a contrived word change to appease the hurt feelings of a few to meet a narrative.
I think it is silly, but other than that, I don't much care. Call it whatever you want toc call it.
I suspect though, that our fellow citizens of African decent had not been grinding their teeth in agony over the disrespect from thinking that "master bedroom" was a celebration of slavery. It's more like the woke deciding what should be offensive to a minority without consulting the feelings of that minority.

More on point, as it only takes one complaint:

Well, how about the "family room". What if the buyer is not a family. Would that be a turn off?
