Try using old fashioned oats and more water than recommended. Works fine in the nuker for me. But whichever way you make it, using either brown sugar or maple syrup for sweetening improves it incredibly.
Or if oatmeal as a hot cereal just doesn't do it for you, there are some excellent recipes for oatmeal breakfast cookies.
oatmeal is mushy and slimy. I have tried to like it but don't either.
Try slow cooking it on the stove maybe it will taste better also add a stick of cinnamon while cooking it. instead of water try skim milk, I think water gives it that cardboard taste.
Some people mix oatmeal in the blender with juice or water and strain it. and have it as a drink. Maybe that would be a better alternative.
I recently decided to try out oatmeal as a healthy breakfast (I'm on a diet). The first time I made oatmeal, it was GROSS!! I made it in the microwave and used less water than recommended. I had such a hard time choking it down because it was mushy/slimy. I love granola cereal and that has oats in it (and sugar and fat!), so there must be something I can do to make it less mushy. What is the texture supposed to be like? The pictures always look less mushy.
I never ate oatmeal until I made it for my son when he was little. I tried it, and loved it. I don't find it to be mushy or slimy. But I do like steel-cut oats better than rolled oats. Try them, you might like them better. Also, I always make my oatmeal with milk...not water.
My mom makes perfect rolled-oats, but I can never get the ratio right for water and oats. I like the oats chewier than the package instructions recommend, so less water.
Oatmeal is either less mushy or more mushy, but mainly, it's mushy. I've also discovered that making oatmeal is a fine art that I'm not always successful at. I usually use the instant packets.

I use old fashioned oats and nuke it. To be able to get it down, I have to doctor it up with fruit, nuts and either a bit of brown sugar or even Splenda. I like it with fresh peaches, apricots or strawberries and blueberries, and a bit of chopped walnuts. I've tried to eat it with bananas but they just increase the slime factor too much. When I was first learning to eat it, I would pour on just a touch on cream/half n half on it as I ate it. Now I don't need it anymore.

I have friends who swear by the steel cut oats, but I've never tried them. One friend does it in the crockpot over night.
