We took out about 10 bushes, with stumps ranging from the thickness of my wrist to maybe a foot across or so. The bigger ones were so branchy that the stumps were just this ... mass. You remove all the branches with an ax and a hacksaw, and you're left with this lumpy sunchoke-looking ball. (Roasted sunchokes are very tasty, by the way, if you've never had them.) We ground all those stumps to 8 to 10" deep, I'd say. Then we dug and chopped the roots out, but they were woody as heck and not easy to cut. Then we hit the rocks. Just do your best. I think if you can get it down to level soil again, you'll be fine. The roots will just wither.
Also: Use (rent, if needed) a chainsaw if you have to remove a lot of branches. I referred to an ax and hacksaw above, but a chainsaw is so much faster.
Yeah, I don't need the chainsaw now. The tree in the front is a flat 16" wide stump now. My BF took the chainsaw to it after the storm. But I might check out that machine at HD. I'm getting ready to go up there in a bit. I have to buy some window screen - fixing some ripped screens in a couple of windows. I just finished cutting the grass and putting out mulch...need more mulch too. Yeesh. Long day! And oh yeah...this is my spring break!
