We ground all those stumps to 8 to 10" deep, I'd say. Then we dug and chopped the roots out, but they were woody as heck and not easy to cut. Then we hit the rocks. Just do your best. I think if you can get it down to level soil again, you'll be fine. The roots will just wither.

Also: Use (rent, if needed) a chainsaw if you have to remove a lot of branches. I referred to an ax and hacksaw above, but a chainsaw is so much faster.
Yeah, I don't need the chainsaw now. The tree in the front is a flat 16" wide stump now. My BF took the chainsaw to it after the storm. But I might check out that machine at HD. I'm getting ready to go up there in a bit. I have to buy some window screen - fixing some ripped screens in a couple of windows. I just finished cutting the grass and putting out mulch...need more mulch too. Yeesh. Long day! And oh yeah...this is my spring break!

OK, I have to admit that I DO practice a somewhat similar philosophy...
  • I have weed and Scotch at 4:20, then lay down with my women and have a "nap".
  • Government? WHAT government? We have a government?!?
  • Holding hands and sticking together...well, that pretty lady on the subway didn't seem to agree with me. Neither did Officer O'Malley. Or Judge Pistonhammer.
Yeah, it makes you wonder if another kindergarten class was taught:

Play dirty
Hit everyone
