I definitely see the disparity. The better educated you are the more options and choices you have. Companies don't like change, especially when it costs them money, it has to come from government unfortunately. Because the US is primarily a capitalist country the socialised equalities in other countries don't work as well here. Which is a huge shame in my opinion. In my experience in the three years I have lived here in the US I do not believe workers have many rights at all in simple things such as decent vacation times and sick days, I can't possibly imagine how equality in other areas would fare.

This is so true.

I certainly hope so! I also hope more and more employers will look at SAHM and SAHD equally both in terms of hiring and in terms of amounts of parental leave.

Absolutely. Remember, it's only recently that women were given maternity leave in the US. I think it wasn't until 1993 when the US Maternity Bill was passed.

I was not given maternity leave when I had my children in the 80s. I couldn't afford to take time off after my first child so I was back to work after 2 weeks (1981). With my second child (1988) we were better off financially and I was able to take 6 weeks off, unpaid. I considered that a real luxury at the time.

I will always remember a comment I overheard the comptroller make to the president after I returned to work. He muttered under his breath "If we can get by without someone for 6 weeks, we can get by without them period".

Yea, I really can't put forward an opinion or idea of where we are headed. I've only been in my industry for 4-5 years now and I happen to be with a progressive company that has a US scientist at the helm. We are fairing very well. Given that we are euro in origin, we all have at least 6 weeks vacation/yr, we have excellent retirement and 401k contributions. And this co had the foresight to invest in the US before the shyte hit the fan. They're smart people and I'm lucky, as well as my colleagues.

It isn't just women who have it rough here that's for sure.

In New Zealand (where I am from) and Australia where I lived for 4 years before coming here, we had much more vacation days and allocated sick days that were paid for. I was and still am pretty disappointed at the lack of, what I consider, appropriate time off.

I find it appalling that Mothers only have 6 weeks maternity leave and Fathers essentially get nothing. There is little in the way of daycare facilities as well. The whole system is just not family friendly. I wonder if this has some impact on the divorce rate here.

Don't passive guys and passive girls though, ever become a romantic couple, together? You almost make it sound like it's always a passive + aggressive mutually-exclusive combination.

I don't quite understand...why exactly is dating "not a right"? If we say dating is not a right, isn't that the same as saying that some ppl deserve to date, marry, and be happy, but others don't? Isn't that dividing ppl into 2 camps: the "Have's" and "Have Nots"?

How can it be fair or just, to imply that some ppl get to date, and others simply don't? Again, I don't get it...

Equal rights protected by law have nothing to do with what people deserve.

I deserve to win the lottery but that doesn't mean I can sue someone if I lose.

ETA: I guess I do have the right to sue for losing the lottery, just as you can sue someone for refusing to marry you. But we both might have a hard time finding an attorney to take our cases, because our rights were not violated.
