I'm not sure that you and chow were on the same page. He said "can handle big hoses" but nothing of their own whereas you said "work their hose". So I'm guessing here that you were talking about hetro firemen while chow... well who really knows what chow might be talking about? Gay firemen? I.E. "Hey, looks like you could use having your hose handled" hehe
I don't like under gravel filters given that I like to plant. I have a deionizer, but I'm not sure what that's suppose to do...and I'm a chemist lol. I always heard that we have to keep their tanks super clean. I limit my water changes to bi-weekly or monthly. A water change always seem to disrupt the tank.
I just siphon off 1/3 weekly and replaced with fresh water without disrupting the balance, or at least, that's what I was told. The plant growth is so prolific, they need trimming. Total water replacement, (leaving just enough water...around 4 inches above the aquascape) is only done whenever the water starts to look murky.

Well now you have a point. And if I recall, that's the second gay statement chow has made this week...
LOL...I had to get that dig in...but you better go check on your woman...seems she's already looking for your replacement!
