Hey Jerz, are you there? C'mon! You should be done picking up your son by now. What's the deal?

Here I am...I was back on here today... I don't know what people would make of a commercial where a man head-banged a woman. If it was the same setup, where she wouldn't let him have the food, etc., maybe that would be the context in which people would find it funny? As far as I can tell, that was what was supposed to be funny...the sheer surprise/shock of it...you don't expect her to react like that.

I've seen plenty of commercials and then some where women land on their *sses, trust me! I don't really think either way it's an attempt to stimulate revolt. Again, as I said earlier...I personally didn't find the head banging commercial funny. I did find it a shock because, as I said, it's something that never happens. Or anyway, it's something I've never seen happen and I hope never to see it!

ETA: Oh, and plenty of commercials where women are humiliated for the stupid, grasping witches that we are. I'm thinking of the State Farm commercial where the husband is on the phone with Jake from State Farm...the homely wife in her drab night attire comes down to screech at the husband about how he's talking to "her" on the phone...wants to know who the "woman" is or whatever...then she shrills, "She...sounds...hideous!"

And the husband glares and curls his upper lip in utter disgust to let her know what a stupid moron she is: "Well, she's a guy, so..."

We idiotic, jealous, grasping, homely wives, what can ya do... You can just about live through it...poor dudes...don't worry, Jake in the khakis is in your corner, LOL...

Sexism is not relegated to men in marketing. And yeah, it's harmful...if a person really wants to take stock in it.

I don't. It's media. It's designed to grab your eyes, one way or another. If it's with shock value, that's what it is. If it's with "hey guys, I know you can relate to the ugly jealous wife!" or "hey wives, here's a paper towel for your stupid husband's toddler-style mess!", then that's what it is. If it's a shock-value bajillion-dollar "This is our one shot during the SuperBowl, we HAVE to make it make people's eyes pop or our butts are fired!" woman head-butting John Stamos, then that's what it is. You can rest assured I didn't learn to physically abuse men from that commercial. So don't worry.

Honestly, if you're looking to the media as a sign of how people generally feel about one another, I don't think you're going to get all that accurate a picture.

First of all, I'm not denying the existence of sexism against women. Again, what dissatisfies me is society's greater tolerance for anti-male sentiment, and it's general lack of concern for the well-being of men, and although most of it is unintentional, it's harmful regardless.

There's this illusion that men can take care of themselves, but how exactly does that translate into men being 5 times more likely to be the victims of a murder/violent crime?(Hyde's link anyone?). But hey, it's mostly men hurting men, so who cares right? As long as these vagabonds keep their savagery hands off helpless women, life will be fine and dandy. Well, I just wanna say that it's not fine for me. All I hear from where sit is, "A gentleman never hits women." Sure, I get that (Double Duh!...I don't consider myself a gentleman and I don't hit people, so I'm sure that's a piece of cake), but what about men?

Now, keep in mind my initial claim was in reference to my personal life experience, but you dismissed it as paranoia, because according to you, these things aren't happening in your neck of the woods. And BTW, I'm still quite surprised that you haven't met any men who would never hit a woman, but are comfortable with the idea of hitting a man for a similar fault. IMO, that seems a little off, but you know what? I'll give you that one. Maybe I'm paranoid, maybe you've just become desensitized to it. Maybe we live in two entirely different worlds.

Anyway, that's why I figured I'd post stuff from the media, but you dismissed that also. So I guess my question is, if the media is unreliable and our personal experience deviate, how do we reconcile an accurate depiction of people's general feeling towards one another?

Are we gonna agree to disagree or am I gonna have to......?

*Currently waiting on your consent to post other personal encounters and media news ( not commercials ) to get my claim back in check. *

RH, I don't disagree with what you're saying, but what is your solution? "Society" is made up of women and men, and many of the images of violence against men in the media are created by men for a largely male audience. You're going to go after the producers and consumers of action movies, video games, even sports. As many women who complain about objectification of women in the media are told, if there wasn't an audience for it, it wouldn't exist. You may not like it, but it is what it is.
