I used to think this way too, and I approached soooo many men who were looking at me thinking they might be into me. After I got past my 100th or so 'no thanks' I started realizing they weren't looking because they were attracted to me.
I still approach fairly often (and it's fun to do so here in Boston ) and still not a single taker so far. I mean...that's a 100% failure rate. Just yesterday there was a pretty good looking guy looking at me (and yes, he was a few inches shorter than I am) and I said hello and tried to start a little conversation. He got up and moved away. If that's not a rejection, I don't know what is.
How about saying:" I think you are good looking", enough with empty meaningless conversation.
