In theory I believe the omega male doesn't compete at all. The lowest ranked female picks which omega mae she'll breed with and/or start a relationship with. Chance are the male will accept her because he can't do better meaning neither of them will be happy.

Agreed, grasshopper. To an extent. I would submit to you that many omega males will just end up woman-less, because many females, omega or otherwise, will prefer to share one alpha or beta male with several women than be the one and only of an omega male.
I think it was Essence Magazine where I read an article some years ago, where young black women interviewed for the article, all said, every single one of them I think, that they would rather share a wealthy black man with several women than be married monogamously to an employed black man that worked a low or middle paying blue-collar job.
What scientist looking at sexual selection found, to put in my own way of phrasing things, the distribution of female mates for males looks more akin to the inequality in wealth distribution in wealth. Some men they found end up with 0 women and some men end up with 100 women. For women the found the distribution of male for them looked more akin to wealth distribution in the socialist-democracies of Northern Europe. Just about all women end up with 1 man an no woman has like 100 husbands.
Humans seem to be more akin to gorillas in this way than bonobos. Female bonobos screw everyone, omega males, alpha males, h___ they even screw their own juvenile sons until they turn about age 6, then it becomes taboo.

I think a lot that goes into our choice of mates is not necessarily genetically programmed into us but is more a result of culture and social conditioning. You could raise little to only date males with blue shoes. I have no doubt most (some would veer off at some point and rebel against that) do just that.
That's the reason we push for society to recondition, to indoctrinate,
our new values (note: it's not the values the person sat alone on an island and reasoned out themselves) into the heads of little kids from everything from gay is okay to white woman and black man couples are okay.
You could easily teach/indoctrinate girls to not care about if a male is employed or short or whatever. You could teach--like feminist have been doing now--to boys that to not care if a female is fat or works or eats with her mouth open or curses or whatever.
Feminist have been attempting--with success I might add--to keep held in place gender rules for males but eradicate them for females.
Bearing in mind the social sciences--as with the Catholic Church--acknowledge the differences between a persons
biological sex and their
gender.
Male/masculine gender traditionally is: the sport of boxing, military service, police work, working a job (not expected of the female/feminine gender).
As you see... females are boxers (I'm a fan of Lucia Rijker by the way), soldiers, cops, they work jobs (but expect a male to do so and earn as much or more than them).
Feminist do not mind gender bending for males if they are gay but encourage females to reject such males (if the males are heterosexual) as mates.
Frankly, I don't listen much to society says. Especially in the United States as it's usually hypocritical and contradictory and fails my higher standard of logic. On the other hand, I prefer the feminist to some of those cruel and savage men in Cambodia the way they subjugate girls (in a Buddhist population in a country where Buddhism is theoretically the state religion).
Basically, in the United States, the omega male is screwed.
On a positive note: Some omega males (Black-American ones at least) would be alpha males in England. I was flabbergasted when I watched a documentary on recruits into the British Royal Marines. And I'm not trying to denigrate those blokes. They seem like good peeps. But if they are representatives of beta and alpha males in British popular society, then by God the Black-American omega male in inner-city USA could clean up p___ over there. You mean to tell me I don't have to rob banks, shoot a m___ the f___ in the head, go to prison, mean mug a m___ the f___, or go to college, and still be at least beta? Ah h___.
And I've seen on video unemployed, missing teeth, drug addicted, impoverished males in Brazilian slums with loyal girlfriends that are comparable to some of the hottest looking black females in I-like-to-freeze-my-balls-off Milwaukee.
So, I think it may be possible for a male's "omega," "beta," and "alpha" value to shift up and down as he moves from one country to the next. One culture to the next.
