Not to mention you generally out live your kids.
Boarding ours is a pain, too much stress for two of them. That's why we rented a house at the beach last year and took them with us.

We had a female Chow that was 11 years old when she suddenly lost weight and her appetite; within 3 days she was dead. The vet found a mass on her liver and we were supposed to take her to a specialist the next day........she didn't make it through the night. The only time this dog went to the vet was for her regular check-ups.
I think the same metabolism that enables their fast growth and amazing reselience also aids in their rapid deterioration.
Yes, allergies...check. He's allergic to bees...found that out the hard way.
Genetic issues...we are safe there, he went through a slew of genetic testing before we got him.
Other issues...we'll deal with when they come. It's life.

Well, depends on what the discussion is about. Some things are joint decisions...some things are not but they are definitely easier than animals...LOL

Are they dogs, WF? We've thought of taking our cat with us on trips, but I'm sure that would freak him out, too. I've read stories of people taking their cats on trips in their RV and how much the cats liked it, but I'm still very doubtful. I've read that dogs usually are more agreeable to travel.

We've racked our brain trying to come up with ideas. It's hard for us to even stay overnight anywhere.

(Off topic: All this time, I thought "wrack" was the correct spelling. I just looked it up to be sure. Apparently, there's a long-standing argument about whether it's "wrack" or "rack" in this instance. I hate the English language, LOL.)

I can't stay in a house or hotel that is "pet friendly" so Finn can never come with us. I have allergies to most animals but it's easily managed in my house. I've gotten used to them for the most part. They can't rub against me and if I pet them I have to wash my hands/arms. They don't sit on the furniture I sit on and they aren't allowed in the beds...etc. We've been in a hotel room once that was pet friendly...never again. I was miserable!

That is the most frustrating part for me, not being able to communicate with him. Like when the cat is pitifully yowling the whole way to the vet, and we can't explain that we're just trying to keep him healthy. (That argument never worked on me when I was a kid, though, LOL.) Or why I poke him with a sharp needle twice a day. Or why he can't eat any of our "good" food.

One time we had to give him drops in both his ears and his eyes for about a week or so. Chow had to hold him down, and I would administer them. When we were done, our poor cat would angrily prance around the room and practically kick like a bronco, he was so mad. I felt so bad for him. He must have thought we were torturing him.

Wow, that must be a pain. It's surprising you agreed to have pets. I hope you make your family aware of your sacrifice.

I guess when Chow was young, he used to really blow up (allergic) around cats. Fortunately (or unfortunately, he'd probably say ), he outgrew that.

That's what I was referring to; later in life. We deal with the skin allergies now, wasn't an issue in their younger years.
The Chow I talked about earlier would eat bees, she hated them. And by hate I mean spot one across the yard and go attack it. I witnessed her snap them out of flight.

Yep, dogs. We rented a minivan, tossed them, their pillows, and all the other necessities and away we went. They adapted rather quickly with the only barrier having to go up and down stairs.

Well I was the one that wanted them. The pet I was most allergic to was the guinea pig though...couldn't not even go near that thing (she has since died). My own pets are easy though...but it took a while to figure out what I could and could not tolerate. I have allergies to damn near everything though so I'm used to it.

Finn gets an itchy face from something outside but it's not severe.

She ate bees and nothing happened?? Didn't they sting her?

Finn LOVES to chase flies. It drives me bonkers when one gets in the house...he runs and jumps all over the damn place. He knocked me over the other day trying to get his fly. Can't help but love him but he's a PITA sometimes!

Why do you think she hated them?

Our cat lacks the killer instinct.

A minivan huh? I would have paid to see that!
