ive never been a suit kind of guy but the lady im taking to dinner later this week is actually two years older than me so im wondering if I need to prove to her that im not in anyway immature
is a suit a prerequisite for visting a decent restaurant , I do dress well but I don't and have never been into suits
Based on my admittedly limited knowledge in regards to this, I don't think that you need to wear a suit when you go to a decent restaurant unless this restaurant has a dress code or something like that. Thus, you don't have to wear a suit--just wear something else which looks (really) nice.
Personally, though, I might wear a suit, at least sometimes, once I will go on dates.
I'd wear a suit if you know how to dress and feel more like yourself in a suit or a sport coat and tie than the "uniform of the day". I was institutionalized at an early age and wore coat and tie in school from the age of 6-19, and had to play dress-up in various jobs. I prefer "relaxed", but have noticed that in the right place with the right woman, I actually feel more like myself in a coat and tie. Experience matters.
Decent restaurant? Probably listed in the phone book. Perhaps you should call for a reservation and when you do, you can ask if coat and tie is a requirement.
You'll show the lady that you have planned in advance for this occasion when the host/hostess/maitre 'd escorts you to your "reserved" table.
Sadly, unless it's a white-tablecloth type of place, people don't dress up nearly enough.

I'd say go for it if you're into suits. It'll give you loads of confidence. But, if you're not into them, you'll probably look uncomfortable and the idea will backfire on you.
Don't you ever go out to restaurants? If you're going to a restaurant that you normally frequent and you never see anyone wearing suits, why would you feel you need to wear a suit?

I do go out to restaranuts but the restaurant is not the point , its a nice restaurant but its not Michelin star or anything
this girl is two years older than me but she comes across as ten years older , very mature ,sensible type

In Boston and NYC (the cities where I am most familiar with the restaurant scenes) there are a lot of places where a suit isn't out of place, but a scant few where there is actually a jacket requirement. The trend of more laid-back fine dining continues.
While there's nothing wrong with being "dressier" then the environment (much better than the other way around), you also run the risk of this woman showing up much more casually dressed.
Finally--wearing a suit isn't a sign of maturity or success. Being yourself is, and if you don't normally wear a suit then you're not being yourself.
