I would rather pay for a service that won't let free members send messages. I would expect that having to pay for the service would result in them being better members.
Paid POF allows you to restrict interactions to other paid POF, if you believe that people who pay are more serious.
I've actually sent this to OKCupid. As a paid OKC member, I wish I had a radio button on the search page, which would only show me other paid/A-List members (serious people).
One thing I noticed recently, is that although OKC allows long flowery profiles if you fill them all out, you cannot do a free-form text search. See, I recently did some activities, and went to a certain event, so I tried keywords related to that event and the city it was in. Zero matches. idk how the 'What Are You Into' search box works - even when I went with a common suggestion, clicked thru to the profile, then did Ctrl+F to find the keyword, it still wasn't in the body of the profile.

I still have an account (unpaid)on POF and just checked. You can do this even if you're not a paid member.
POF I still so unrestricted in options, I can't see why anybody would pay once they see how the site works.
I guess this thread is leading me to try POF just for the semi-open messaging and hopefully new faces.
The only restriction I heard POF has: there is a maximum age differential of who you can msg (-14 years), to cut down on the Grandpas trying to hit on the 21 yr olds... and in theory cabana boys trying to hit on Cougars/GILFs

I think there are restrictions you can set yourself, if you'd like them, like age restrictions, distance restrictions, whether someone can message you if they have no pic, length of message. But I don't think any of them are required, they are all optional.

That limits what will show up automatically but you can do an individualized search with whatever parameters you want if you want to look outside your distance, age or whatever, if you want.
