My church has a "safe place" policy. No less than 2 adults can be in a room with a child. Like it or not, even Dear Aunt Sally or Uncle Elmer that you've known for 30 years can be a predator. It happens in churches, scouts, school clubs, etc. Church is not immune...because, after all....we are sinful people just like everyone else.

Did you read it, even 2 people with a child ain't enough if their intention is to protect the fairy tale as five were complacent in keeping this quite.

3 victims of sexual assault

2 offenders (both employed by the church)

Pastor aware, and part of coverup
2 youth pastors, aware and part of coverup
wife of founder, aware and part of coverup

This isn't a bad apple, this is systemic.

Their solution? They are going to pray about it............. yea, I bet they are wishing this would all go away

Nope, just point out the reality of the danger of trusting children to those that sell ancient superstitions for a living.

And the same crap can happen in the Boys Scouts, a school function, etc....etc.....

You're pretty naive if you think it's only a religious setting where predators do their thing. Or maybe it's your particular anti-religious bent that's prohibiting you from thinking straight.

In other words: theism promotes sexual abuse. Brilliant. And what is the danger of trusting your children to ugly and irrational bigots?

It is, perhaps, more about the very real danger that the leaders of these religions and cults will try to cover up the crime, allow the perpetrators to abuse more children and then do their level best to avoid being answerable to those who were abused.

You answered your question in the first sentence...

Snarkiness aside, I think religion poses an added danger, not because religious people are any worse than non-religious, but because most religions have some sort of "divinely" ordered hierarchy, and a concept of spiritual authority that leads people to question their own judgement and perception of morality in favor of that of their religious leaders.

An example was when my youngest sister was looking for a job a couple years after college. Her church elders came to her and told her not to take a particular job, because they had a problem with the proprietor. And she did what they said, not because she had a problem, not because she saw a warning sign, but because men who were "speaking for God" told her to. These guys I think honestly had her best interests at heart, but there is no guarantee that religious authorities do, and the authoritarian nature of many religions and religious organizations compound the general hazards of life. One only has to look at history and see that abuse of the inherent power structures in religions have caused untold bloodshed, oppression, and misery.

I would be less concerned about a religion that does not have any sort of human authority structure (implicit or explicit) or notion of relative godliness or holiness as it would be less exploitable.
