Are theists really persecuted, or do they force their will on society by feigning outrage. By that measure those that are atheistic are the ones being persecuted and often silenced by the theists and the society they have doing their bidding by use of their tears.

Just browsing the Gay marriage legal..thread and seeing the stout argument put up there by those who begin from the premise that it is wrong because their religion says so and look for signs that the legalisation is going to be overturned, it occurs to me that a group who are permanently in the position of fighting change tooth and nail are permanently in the position (except for a short but catastrophic 2 terms under G W Bush) where they are going to lose all their battles, even if they do have numbers and money.

It must make them feel like the persecuted minority that the PEW results suggest they will be in fifty years.

Excellent post. I've never really thought of it that way before but it makes sense. Considering soeciety is moving in a direction where equality will become more common then fundamentalists are just going to keep losing. The fact that they keep losing by trying to hault change probably makes them feel like victims. Slavery, mixed race marriages, women in leadership roles, gay marriage. These are all things fundies have (or had) strong views on but had no chance of winning in the long run.

Soon, they'll run out of things/people to be bigoted about and have no further reason to exist.

I predict the last fundie poofing out of existence by March 21, 2062.

All that will be left is a chard fragment of a business card, advertising the now-defunct website of Matt "The Oil" Slick III.

Alas, I will not be witness to this wondrous event.

At least bodily.

I'll be around then if all things go well. Assuming God doesn't smite us all before then. I think the last fundy will be around much longer then that though. I just think it will be marginalized to the point where they will hold the same beliefs but will not be open about it. Much like racists in the US are today. Largely they will not admit it openly.
