So when you say the universe is made out of information, are you thinking of the movie The Matrix? Humans gather information in order to solve problems. That would be my definition of conscious. In that case, the universe would purposely gather information, look for relationships and use it to answer a question or solve a problem.
When humans answer a question or solve a problem, that knowledge is usually transferred to other people and generations. Now consider all of the misunderstandings, different conclusions and effects (or no effects) it has on individuals. Consider those people in the dark about the information.
If the universe was purely informational, if it is one entity, wouldn't all humans and animals have the same information downloaded into us?
That Matrix movies were based on this idea. The idea of the universe being made out of information goes back at least to the beginning of computer science, mid 20th century.
In the movies, the higher level is matter, I guess. In the real philosophy, higher levels would be information also.

Ummmm. No. Organisms or 'members of a species' only evolve if they need to, if their environment requires them to adapt. Crocodiles for example and some insects have remained unchanged for millions of years - because they are superbly adapted to their environment and don't need to evolve.

Your constant misrepresentation of looking at the actual evidence as 'explaining away what we do not like' says a lot about your position.
The simple fact that people have different, contradictory spiritual experiences that align with their cultural upbringing is evidence that spiritual experiences are a product of our brain. Even if some spiritual experiences are genuine (which I do not believe).
You can rely on spiritual experiences if you want, but to ignore the evidence that you are probably wrong is your problem, not that of atheists (straw or otherwise).

Well, yes, but "survival of the fittest" assumes an environmental "cutting edge."

It's starting to happen now. We have not seen anything yet! I can't imagine what we are going to see within the next 20 years on this earth.
Unfortunately the current Holocene extinction is affecting other animal and plant species...this extinction is the direct result of humans. However when ecosystems are disrupted it spreads out like a domino effect to all living species.
