Well Byron, I know he was NOT literally with them. The expression simply means his presence/blessing was with them which, as per bible-speak, meant they were to be invincible and formidable yet even with God's presence/blessing, they could not defeat an enemy with chariots. THIS was the crux of my post. With God on their side, they could not defeat an enemy.
