Hide in plain sight, with the laptop on table facing the door web cam enabled, but screen turned off, or a old school web cam installed like they're used normally. Set up your web cam to record. If you think it may get tampered with set it up to upload to a server, so even if they demolish the whole computer, the images are still there.

Even if they cut the power, the battery will keep it going. The up-link won't be affected if you have your router on UPS or using a cellular based internet connection.

Even if you don't record remotely, someone have a whole lot of explaining to do as to why your entire computer is missing or the HDD stolen. That's assuming you password lock your computer so they can't just erase the file on the spot.
