Also, can women be curmudgeons? Or would that be a curmudgeoness? Do you have a favorite curmudgeon, or maybe a few favorite curmudgeonly sayings?
And most of all.... what is it about reaching retirement age that brings this out in us?
Present and accounted for!
I do try to pepper any cranky comments with humor to soften the blow. I'm at a point where I refuse to put up with stupidity and rudeness. And now, I have the time and backbone to rectify it.

Humor seems to be the fine line difference between being "curmudgeonly" and being "bitchy." Also, curmudgeonly comments seem to be more about undermining stupidity in general, whereas bitchy remarks seem more personal--they seem to be about undermining a person you dislike or are jealous of.

LOL, yup that's gotta be why curmudgeonliness is the realm of the retiree. No job means no worrying about "what would my boss think..."
All thoughts are well stated folks. You have expressed it better than I could have. At this age, I now say: I have no personal, professional or political aspirations and am finely free to be a curmudgeon.
But it does take time and experrience. If you do not have a natural inclination toward curmudgeoness or a true proclivity it may also take training.

Be warned! It can also get you banned.
YOU should offer classes and write a book. And hey, I'd be PROUD to be banned from some of the businesses around here. You are correct that to perfect one's state of curmudgeoness, it takes years of fine tuneing one's natural inclination.

I prefer just plain cynical. Think Humphrey Bogart, my kind of guy.
