I can't see any valid arguments against it other than that people are used to it and therefore don't like giving up something they are used to. Old people certainly don't have to flock to computer usage just because they're not getting mail on Saturdays anymore; that just doesn't make any sense at all.
Well said and so true. Really - one day. It's not going to matter at all. This should have been done long ago and why are they waiting until August? Ridiculous.

I'm willing to bet, there is some language in postal code that does not require 1st/2nd/3rd Class mail to be delivered, but some language that says 4th Class packages must be.
3rd class mail is junk mail and 2nd class is magazines. No. there is no requirement for those things to be delivered. Junk mail is tossed out by the tons at the post office. I use to work for them so I know.

No doubt cutting Saturday delivery could reduce costs ... and who needs 5-6 day delivery anyway. However, anyone who believes that ANY government agency that cuts $1 in costs ... won't immediately find somewhere else to spend $2 --- without eliminating any existing overhead .... hasn't been paying attention.

For one thing, any agency that 'leaves money on the table' is immediately rewarded by laving their budget cut in that amount the following year. Bottom line: The government doesn't cut costs, they increase spending ... regardless of the cost or benefit to the taxpayers.

The postal workers have been well taken care of for many years. It is time to pull back. Why have several post offices in a small radius?

Kind of funny reading above post, reminds me of when I worked as an telco installer. The gov't would rent empty space to use up money from there budget so as not to have to take a cut in there budget.

I'm all for it for the same reasons others have already explained. Like most, we get more junk mail (despite actively trying to stop it) than worthwhile mail. We're not technically advanced, but we haven't had any bills that we still pay via snail mail for years, online is way more convenient, arguably safer, and sometimes cheaper. I don't buy the senior hardship nonsense either, and I suspect USPS will reduce days/week further as snail mail inevitably continues to decline - but it won't happen quickly (decades, generations).

The USPS union scare ads didn't help, most people could easily see through them...

I have emailed my elected more times than I could even count urging them to allow the USPS to cut Saturday delivery.

In reality, I do not see any issues with going to 5 day delivery, and it is long overdue, and from a business perspective, this shows the USPS is beginning to think like a business.

This initiative will save an estimated $2B/year, but the good thing about it is the millions of gallons of fuel to be saved, and the positive impact on the environment.
Now if they would make the junk mailers pay "real" postage rates we might make some progress. Not to mention save a lot 'o trees.

It won't bother me, unless I get a package notice to be picked up at the post office. Some people only have Saturdays to do stuff like that because they work during the week.

I always had all packages (UPS, USPS, FedEx) sent to my work address for that reason, problem solved. And you or another family member can't go at lunch or after work, so USPS should work Saturdays...
