I'm wondering about others' influence in retirement choices - who got negative (from mild to strong) responses from family and friends when you told them your retirement relocation plans. Did any of it influence you?

Four of our combined seven children reacted badly and negatively. We made the move anyway.

Honestly, I didn't care. I had already done all my serving others time. It was time to do for me!

95% think I'm nuts because I plan on leaving California.

Doesn't bother me at all

(My thanks to Curmudgeon for giving me the wonderful "ABC" answer!)

Had mixed reaction. Our sons were positive about. One was in California and the other lived half hour from where we were moving. Friends and other family had mixed reactions with there being a difference most notably based on race.

Yes, Curmudgeon is the quintessential example of someone able and willing to ignore others' reactions!

You make it sound like that's a bad thing. I think of it as being delightfully independent and not easily swayed.

No, not bad at all. In fact I admire it. Not being swayed by others shows backbone!

If you are at retirement age I think you have done for others long enough, time to do for yourselves and have a great rest of your life doing it.
