I am backwards from many posters. If I throw something out there and there for discussion or saying I know something but I don't have it right, I hope people will bring out the long knives and slice it up. Most of my BS is accidental (and hopefully most of my posts are not BS). Getting corrected in the forum costs me nothing.
I tend to be outspoken about saving even if you don't understand investing very well. I think too many people don't start early enough because they feel like they need to become experts. I am a poster child for doing okay without understanding all that much about the market.

Bada Bing! Didn't say I don't lurk. Not much but still a tad. I have become the same way about sports forums. I think it is just the format of of it and how invisibility allow a few to exploit others and their feelings. We all have done it but sometimes it becomes natural even if unintended.

In fact it has not exactly endeared me to a certain type of C-D poster, namely the type who can't stand to be contradicted in straight-forward ways. And therein lies part of my learned boredom with much of this. I understand what you are saying and find no fault at all in. However on a nice summer day, evening or whenever being in the peace of nature whether it be at the beach, on the deck, yard etc etc rejects the interest in observing it. I have found such peace that my psyche rejects intellectual confrontation that is for me personally unneeded. I have lost interest in it here, sports, politics etc and find the pursuit of civility a more desirable environment. However I am finding this discussion interesting and perhaps a learning experience which is still desirable. It is perhaps a learned peace that has come in many ways and retirement contributes to considerably.
PS- I hate ESPN for just this reason!

I hate ESPN because they still have not retracted their lies about under inflated footballs.

Kind of on a tangent here, and risks ending our streak of agreeable posts, but I kind of get that. He reported that sources from within the NFL (as in the league office) provided the info and he stands by that. In other words, it was never an absolute statement of fact; it was stated that he was given this information and the league office is not pressuring him to reveal the source, which I think is pretty telling.
Mortensen talks 11-of-12 footballs report on ESPN Radio | ProFootballTalk
It looks like someone in the league office should really be taking the heat. I think Brady is a great QB and the Patriots have been an excellent team, but when scrutinized it does appear that something was being done to the footballs and Brady was in on it. The texts that they got from the equipment guys and Brady purposefully deleting his and destroying his phone to prevent retrieval doesn't look good. I think that sort of thing has been going on all around the league and that while the Patriots win mostly because of good coaching and smart play, they get a closer look than most teams because they win so much. The Browns could probably wear fly paper gloves and no one would care.

Yes we are going off on a tangent.

So let me change subject back to mj's made it by adding this.

I am scheduled at this time to be retired militarily in March 2016 and because I am a National Guard Technician my GS job is going to put me towards retirement. I have put my paperwork in to collect but on Monday of this week I went on a job interview. Now I have no idea if I will get the job. It is working in the Federal Government as a GS12 instead of the GS09 I am now. Fingers crossed but the interview went well. The job fits well with what I know and I could fit in very nicely as it is working in the VA department CMOP. My wife is quite suprised to hear that I am very interested as she thought I was resigned to (and I probably was) to taking my retirement pay. But I am not like that and I know that I can really make a large difference in my future retirement. For those who know FERS you will already be able to make quick calculations in your head. But for those who are unaware it will mean the difference between a pension of 2k per month to 2.5k per month with COLA. Also since I will be making more money I can take that additional 10k and put it in Roth that I am lacking. In two years then I can max that out to the full max of 23k per year for as long as I want. I think that could increase in a very short time to another 100k towards retirement. It is very good.

My fingers are crossed. I sent them a thank you letter letting them know I am very interested and hope to hear back from them soon. Of course none of that means I will be selected. It could be a insider that is working there that gets it but who knows.

Best of luck.

My mom was a career scientist at CDC and somewhat begrudgingly took a management position the last few years for much the same reason; BIG difference in retirement from just 3 years (I think) at a higher GS level.

as far as how i saved ? i used the fidelity insight newsletter since 1987 and stuck to following the script using nothing special fidelity funds .

when i had enough saved i entered a partnership with one of the country's biggest real estate moguls and invested in nyc rent stabilized co-ops and commercial space .

it was just as much luck as skill as the real este deal turned out to be amazing .

we bought in for peanuts in comparison to what things ended up being worth .
Just seeing this thread, so I am quite late in wishing you congratulations on your well deserved retirement! All the best to you and yours as as you begin this new phase!

I have a funny story about Banff. I knew of the Canadian Rockies for many years and always wanted to go. Hubby is also a great photographer. We moved to Maine after our retirements in Sept. 2010 and so we had 3 winters in Maine before I went ahead and researched where to go in the Rockies and then I booked the trip for late June 2012. The more I researched, the more I realized it would still be winter there, and the more we knew, the more hubby was having a fit. Here we move to a snow filled and cold state, and then I planned a trip to more snow and cold! But, I had already pressed those buttons on the internet, booking stuff.

Well, we had to pack snow pants, buy snow poles (we were going to do some hiking), bring snow hats, boots, gloves etc. It was absolutely spectacular, but totally snow filled. We stayed one week in a condo in Canmore, near Banff, and another week in Golden, in a rented house. The highway had avalanche's, closures for snow etc. etc. Bears and other wildlife abound and we were only able to do the hikes rated "easy" and even some of those we had to turn around due to the snow and ice. Hubby was ready to kill me - but of course, we had a great trip and he got super photos.

Oh, one more thing- we had not flown since 9/11/2001. No flying mainly due to Hubby not wanting to take off his shoes etc. So, who gets pulled out of the line in Maine- he does, for full body scan. I was laughing so hard. Then the airlines did not put our luggage on the plane in Maine - it was a little plane and a family with lots of luggage was returning to China, so without telling us, they never loaded it. So, in Canada, we weren't able to get through customs without our luggage and the run around (after we figured out what was happening) almost made us miss the flight to Calgary. Our condo was 114 km from the airport (and there was a snowstorm during our drive and then flooding in the town) but they delivered it to us in the middle of the night. Then, on our way back to Maine, they cancelled our flight in Toronto and they put us up in a hotel. So, needless to say, we haven't booked another flight yet. But, Maine is big and beautiful and keeping us super happy exploring different areas.

Anyway, Mathjak- best wishes and happy trails!

So glad to hear someone else feels this way, especially a guy.
