This is very true and I think one of the main reasons women keep their hair short as they age. I know women whose hair was long and beautiful when they were young but as they got older their hair got brittle and dry even though they took good care of it. Their hair no longer looked good at the length it did when they were younger. Cutting it short not only makes it look better but is also easier to take care of.

I have never been successful in wearing my hair long. I have "crazy hair." It's very curly and there are cowlicks all over the place. Trying to grow my hair long has always been a disaster. I would have to spend half my life trying to keep it looking good.

I like it short, the short length encourages the curls and the curls look nice as long as they are short.

I always laugh at those who say that men like women's hair long so I should try to grow mine long. Any man who would be so superficial as to judge me by my hair is not a man whose opinion I would value.

Let's examine your hairdo, OP, and all other aspects of your physical appearance, to ensure everything is appealing to *us.*

Gag.

An opinion about a hair style all of a sudden becomes "condescending, chauvinistic, paternalistic," etc. That just doesn't make any sense.

If a woman posted how absurd men with comb-overs look, would that evoke the same flood of hostility? I seriously doubt it. It is an opinion, no more and no less. It wouldn't mean the poster was anti-male or any such thing. In fact, some women have posted that opinion in this thread, as if in rebuttal to the OP. Yet is not a rebuttal at all because they are two separate questions:
1. Do men with comb-overs look absurd, unattractive, etc.?
2. Do woman with extremely short hair look absurd, unattractive, etc.?

One could answer no to both, yes to both, or yes to one and no to the other, because one thing has nothing to do with the other - it is a matter of OPINION, and very subjective opinion at that. All opinions about style are inherently subjective, and style in any free country is in almost constant flux.
I find the hippie type balding men with pony tales a little pathetic. Grow up and clean up. And if you are not clean shaven I hope someone buys you a razor for Christmas and you make good use of it. Everybody has preferences. I think some are beginning to look more presentable now. I believe this happens when people begin to feel better about themselves.

There are several reasons for this...I know as I am getting older, it is harder for me to get around and go for a hair cut on a regular basis. This can be handled one of two ways...let it grow and get out a couple of times a year to get it cut or buy a pair of clippers and cut it short. I have actually purchased the clippers but not used them yet and am going with the first option. A few years ago I wore my hair in a short pixie so am no stranger to really short hair. The ONLY thing holding me back from using clippers is I am a little overweight and don't know if I have a good shape of head to pull off a buzz cut. I like watching the YouTube videos of buzz cuts, but the women are all very young. I'd like to see some older ladies giving themselves buzz cuts. BTW, I have always felt extremely feminine when my hair has been shorter...I tend to wear more make up than I do when it is longer. Women should wear their hair the way they want to wear it.
Clippers all over are extreme and you might not like the look. Before I went that route I would try something with clippered sides and back and some length on top. You can always cut more off but you can't put it back on. I'm 71 and have short hair, I cut it myself and vary the style from time to time, sometimes I side part it and let the top grow quite long, sort of like this https://www.pinterest.com/pin/11751649007656805/ At other times I have it short and spiky on top, similar to this https://i2.wp.com/therighthairstyles...=2&w=500&ssl=1

My suggestion is go to a stylist or even a traditional barbershop that does women's hair the first time and take a few pictures with you so they can get an idea of what you like. Pay attention when they cut your hair, then you can trim it yourself every month or so without having to recreate the style from scratch. Ask them what clipper blade they use so you won't end up bald when you trim your own hair

When I was in my thirties I let my hair grow down to my waist and would sometimes wear it in a side bun. I started having headaches and it was suggested to me that my hair might be the cause. So I had it cut. I think I lost about five pounds with that cut. My hair is very thick.

I was having trouble recently with one side of my hair wanting to stick straight out so I have changed to a very short bob with bangs. Problem is getting anyone to cut the bob short enough. I tell the person cutting it that when I look in the mirror I don't want to see any hair behind my ears. Only one has succeeded in doing that. I am trying to find her in the beauty shop before I have it cut again.

Old thread but I have long wished retirement age women would keep their hair longer, not short.

Or maybe they should just be left alone to make their own decisions on the basis of what they know is best for them.

Interestingly, it is unlikely that most "retirement age women" really care what anyone else thinks of the length of their hair.

There are likely many people with hair styles you consider appropriate or acceptable. Look at them.

How long is your hair? I hope it’s a Beattle cut. I love Beattie cuts. I wish all retired men would wear Beattle cuts, not crew cuts .

Short is convenient and no upkeep except a wash, blow dry, and comb out. Plus it is naturally curley. I wear my hair as I like, not to please anyone else. Always have.
My sister shaved her head during a time when she could not get in the shower to wash it after she broke her leg. She kept it that way afterward. Said she ''enjoyed the freedom''. Why should men be the only ones allowed that freedom? Forget that hooey.

You have "long wished" your particular preference apply to ALL women?

So weird.
