In many areas, if the power goes out so does cable and phone as the lines are all on the same poles. Good luck finding a corded phone! My WalMart does not carry them.
Along with the 5 wireless phones, I have a corded phone in the garage and one hanging on the wall next to the toilet in the bedroom. Don’t flush if you are speaking to someone that you like, however it’s appropriate for many calls
We have a LL with four portable phones connected. We can pick it up just about anywhere in the house as long as we keep them charged. We use the caller ID and ignore most of them. I just recently hooked up with NOMOROBO to eliminate a lot of the unwanted calls. We still get some, but NOMOROBO disconnects them before the portable phones start squawking about who is calling. so, a couple rings and done. Only calls that we want to pick up get through now.
My wife and I have smart phones, but she never charges hers. I will likely get rid of hers when the contract is up, although I like her having it for emergencies. I like to have mine on hand for when my grandkids start acting up. I text my son to let him know he needs to pay attention to them. He's in the same room usually, with his face buried in his cell phone.
Finally got rid of the landline this month. Saved it for emergency in case there is a blackout. But every time when there is a 30-miles/hr wind, it has always been the landline that got disrupted first while internet, cable and electricity remained undamaged. And every disruption takes up to two weeks to fix.
Sorry about losing your LL number. When we dropped our landline, I wanted to keep that number so I ported it to my smartphone. It was easy to do with Verizon.
It was like other long time items; I was sorry to see it go, but felt lighter with one less thing. We both have had cell phones for >25 years, so the landline number was the easier to let go of the three. It was part of our overall downsizing.
Is an internet Vonage phone considered a land line these days? That's what I have with 3 wireless phone receivers. Cell phone goes with me when I leave the house. But I don't want to carry it from room to room all the time so will keep the "land line"
We do. However, AT&T have mid to long term plans to completely cease all investment and maintenance of the copper network in our area. I had always hoped that we would get fiber to our drop or worst case fiber to the curb, but that is not to be.
AT&T will ultimately have everyone on wireless one way or another.
For those who want the "wireline" experience, AT&T will set up a wireless link between a cell tower and a fixed subscriber terminal mounted at your house's system access point. That will then connect to the existing in-home wiring of the existing wireline system. At that point, the advantages of having a wireline (or fiber) system vanish and might as well drop the land account completely.
Of course we could also have Comcast VOIP. At least there is a physical connection over coax instead of finicky RF.

Just a FYI, Alarm system can be setup to go a traffic over your Internet Connection, or as a cell call.
It much "easier" to tap a landline - (POTS - Plain old telephone service ) then a cell call, Your cell call is all digital traffic that is encrypted from the time it leaves your phone until the Cell Carrier delivers the call into the Public Switched Network (PSN) , (at that point the PSN carrier encrypts the call on their end as it goes their copper/fiber), A phone call can be Encrypted / Decrypted a few times on it path from you to the called party.
A landine call (POTS) - Copper line to your home, The call is analog based, the call unencrypted that anyone can tap into using a cheap phone tap kit on the line. The call does not get encrypted until it reaches the point where the phone company converts the call from a analog call to a digital call to move it thru the network.
I have cell backup for the alarm.
Well, that's the crapola on tapping my conversations! I understood differently. Oh well, nothing is sacred.
We dropped our land line about 10 years ago and haven't missed it a bit. Yes, there was some trepidation when we first made the decision to drop it, but I kept telling myself, we all have cell phones, so what's the point of paying $45.00 a month for a land line that for the past two or three years we rarely use.
Back 10 years ago, the only calls we received on the land line were from telemarketers. Now of course, telemarketers have discovered the cell phone unfortunately.
It's gotten to the point, sad to say, if I don't recognize the number I don't even answer. The telemarketers have "cried wolf"....ring, ring, ring....so much and so often, I just refuse to answer unless I know who you are.
On the rare occasion when a telemarketer does catch me on the phone for one reason or another, it's getting harder and harder to even be civil to them. To me it's not much different that If I went into a neighborhood and walked up to every homes door, opened it and screamed...."hey everyone, listen to me, I have something very important to say...now damn it, drop whatever you're doing and listen to me".
Some people work from home and need their portable computers. Yup, there are plenty of retired folks who work...some even work full time....how they're retired, I'll never understand.
I'm 74, but I'm not retired. I have three phone lines, a computer with a large screen and large keyboard, a printer, fax, copier, and a credit card terminal. However, you think that I can't have a real business unless I trade it all for a cell phone?
I'm not trying to be the most envied boy in high school. I just wish to make money.
