We had a Roomba several years ago (10+) and liked it ... except it seemed to periodically get stuck under stools or on loose throw rugs. Also, it never really went back and docked as advertised - and I had to replace the batteries once or twice. Finally, the 'brain' went out and it would only go around in circles, so we got rid of it.
.
The "circle dance" means you have to dust off the sensors, or there is dirt/debris caught in the wheels. Mine has done the circle dance a few times, so I made sure the wheels were clean, blasted the insides with canned air, and it worked fine again.
I've had a Roomba for 5 years, and love it. We have both hard and throw rugs, and have used it on wall to wall carpeting.
I bought because of two large dogs shedding, plus my own very long hair, and it works wonders, plus it picks up all the dander and dust.
I don't even have the more expensive pet version, and I'm happy with it.
I keep considering getting the one that mops.... but always put it off.

I'm wondering what you mean here...if a house is messy with things out of place, you still have to move those things out of the way to use a regular vacuum, same as with any kind of vacuum, no difference with a robotic vacuum.
If you vacuum you could vacuum around the mess, if you set off the Roomba it will try to suck it up. I have to pick up the dog mats make sure my laptop cord is not on the floor etc.

I think this would be good for us moving to a 55+ home all on one floor... a couple of questions though?
1. Does it run at the same time every day? Can you set it to run while you are sleeping or is it too noisy?
2. A little concerned about someone tripping over it? Is that ever a problem??
You can program it or set if off manually. Our schedule varies, and I need to pick up stuff, so we set if off when we leave for the gym or to walk the dogs.
"Loud" varies by person, so can't really address it.
I don't find it to be a tripping hazard, you know it's there.

I don't vacuum around a mess, I vacuum the whole floor every time--that's what cleaning is all about. I put chairs up on the table, pick up the firewood basket and any cords on the floor as well before I vacuum. Otherwise, the floor doesn't really get cleaned.
But if you just wanted to vacuum a small area, you can set the Roomba to do a spot vacuum, then you wouldn't have to vacuum the entire floor and pick things up to accomplish that.
I had trouble with it banging up my dinner room chair legs.
Anyone else have that problem?
No, not at all. The bumper lightly touches, doesn't bang into anything.
