The roofing business is full of alcoholics and druggies. If not the owner, a goodly amount of the workers are.
Not just the roofers. This applies to the construction industry across the broad.
Over the years, I have so many contractors who told me they will show up on an appointment then poof! They just disapper. It's about as flaky as they come.
The owner came over and apologized for his worker. He stated that the worker could have been arrested since he was trespassing when he entered my backyard. I was offered a $700 rebate, which I accepted.
He showed me videos of the work being done. Looks good.
Living a a large (18,000) over 55 community, workmen are reliable. Word travels like wildfire. You know who is good, and who isn`t. Plus we have many retired plumbers and carpenters, electricians and just about anything else you need, including lawyers. Facebook is good for this reason.
There are roofers who will not get a job in my community, because of word of mouth. That is more then 9,000 homes, in their area.
Isn't that doing the same thing using a different venue ?
Why not ask your neighbors first ? Or someone you know ?
Or even your realtor if you are there just a few years.
I wouldn't take recommendations from strangers.
NextDoor is your neighbors. It's a local area online bulletin board type app/website that allows neighbor s to comment and ask for referrals and make recommendations.
I just had my go-to yard guy come and give me a quote on some trimming, and doing some river rock work in the front. He's a good guy and was really happy to get some work for himself and his guys at this time of year. He texts me when he's on his way over, and calls when he arrives. He updates me as he works, and makes suggestions as we talk about the job. We work on a handshake basis, and he asks for no money (not even for materials) until the job is done. He wants to make sure I'm happy before I pay. We have a bit of a language barrier, but we overcome it with lots of patience and talking with our hands.
^^^^^^^^^ We have a "bit of a language barrier" too, LOL. Can't communicate without google translate with our craftsmen and service guys. But they've all been reliable, honest and show up when promised, much to our surprise. We expected the "manana" treatment but so far, everyone has been prompt and lets us know schedules via WhatsApp.
It's all word-of-mouth between expats. We're not on FB, but that's the way the word is spread. No businesses have websites, just pages on FB.
I commiserate with all the roofing issues over the U.S. due to these weather events. Roofs are flat here with an enjoyable terrace on top.

Must be nice. My roof is flat as well but I don't think I'd want to put patio furniture up there. On the plus side, the roofer found an owl perched on the roof...the kind of owl that doesn't move much and scares away other birds. Now if I can just find something that scares away fallen leaves.

One thing turned me off about Tucson area homes are the flat roof architecture. They all look like little White Castle restaurants with earth-tone paints.

In CO and probably other states near Hail Alley, the roofing biz is full of transients, too. Loads of out-of-state, fly-by-night roofing crews would come in for the kill after bad storms. And then disappear.

I guess you missed the gun turrets on each corner.
