I was born and raised in RI......Now living in Virginia....
A true Rhode Islander, loves choricou on everything. An Awful, Awful from Newport Creamry can not be beat - even better a Cabinet......The 50 steps is a great place to think and ponder. Coffee syrup is a MUST with a pastrami grinder.....Alot has changed since I have left, but I will always have fond memories....
I'm not Rhode Islander, but I do know there is a large Portuguese-descendant population in RI and I happen to know choricou is a type of sausage. Do you have malasada for before Lent?
Try living in Louisiana out in the boondocks where there are no Dunkin Donuts and no Dels Lemonade. I can't believe they don't have a Dunkin Donuts here because they have the best Iced Coffee but nobody down here likes Dunkin Donuts. They all love Krispy Kreme or Southern Maid Donuts. These people down here don't like change and boy do they talk funny. Give me a Dels and a Dunkin Donuts anyday.
Many people hear "Rhode Island" and say, "That's part of New York, right?" It makes RI'ers want to yell, "IT'S A STATE!!! HOW CAN YOU NOT KNOW THAT???"
I hate that when people think Rhode Island isn't a state. I guess they never listened in School.
I sure do love it. Chowder and Clam Cakes Del's Lemonade, and all of what Rhode Island is about. I will never live there again. I was born and raised in Rhode Island but you can't take the Rhode Islander out of me. I sure do love IGGI's clam cakes and Chowder, Dels Lemonade, Dunkin Donuts and all what Rhode Island is. The ocean i sure miss so very much.
I know all about being a Rhode Islander and not living there any more. Living in the Houston area now (by way of Washington state) and let me tell you, I never fail to get asked where I'm from when I speak. Usually they think I'm from NY. When they hear RI, they ask if it's part of New York! Geez....
I miss many things about RI, Rocky Point Shore Dinner Hall, weiners, coffee syrup to name a few. Was there this past Christmas, visiting my Dad. I certainly do not miss the snow!
HI i am from RI am currently looking to move down south my friend already lives down ther when they ask we she is from she says RI they ask where? long island, some people forget we are here then she explains again and the connection is "oh the mafia state'"
Six Degrees of Separation is waaay too far to go in RI. If you can't get into your Senator or Congressperson (or Governor's office !) in two phone calls or less, then you haven't lived here long enough !
Seriously, everyone really does know everyone (or a their close friend/relative) here...
When I went to school in upstate New York, everyone assumed I was from New York City because of my RI accent. Then when I would say I'm from RHODE Island, they'd ask "oh, where on long island?"
...and planning a move to RI in June. I'm looking forward to it, although the high taxes and flat job market are making me a little concerned. Still, I'm hearing much more positive than negative feedback.
This post is interesting; it's giving me a different perspective on the everyday. Thanks!
I dont know where you are moving from but do you're research it is very expensive here and no jobs life long resident so disappointed with the state right now making alot of cut backs in the schools and to the low and middle hard working people its awful so do youre home work
