No, it specifically says that 14 percent is 25 and over. The 9.3 percent statistic is coupled with 5.6 percent for Statewide unemployment, which is close to the BLS statistic of 5.7 percent for June 2014. Whatever source CD is using for unemployment 25 and over may be including retirees or other population not in the labor force. Hard to tell without a citation.

An 88,000 population does not equate to an 88,000 labor force, not even with 100% employment. According to the 2010 census, 21.5% of the population is under 18, and 15.1% are over 65. That's 32,200.

I didn't see the 38,000 number working on your link, but I'm not sure it's so shocking. The unemployment rate is 9.3%. Let's assume that unemployment rate refers to people between 18 and 65, since the number of minors that could possibly file for unemployment is negligible.


9.3% unemployed of that number would be 8,184, plus 32,200 who are children or seniors, plus 38,000 working is 78,384. Isn't it possible that the remaining number is a combination of moms staying at home to take care of children, people too disabled to work, and people working under the table? No doubt Fall River has a depressed economy, but it would be a mistake to state that over 50% of the population isn't working based on the raw population data. 5 year olds are slacking in Wellesley too!

PS - I read the posts in order, but see now that others have raised the same issues, so I apologize for the redundancy. I think massnative overlooks how many people are stay at home caretakers of young children or elderly parents.

16,460 are under 16. The only way to arrive at greater than 50 percent unemployment is to include children in the unemployed. Including the entire population over 16, including the elderly, retirees, disabled, students, stay at home moms, etc., yields 48.1 percent "unemployment."
