Right. How Fung tries to do the dance will be what's interesting. My guess is he's not good enough on his feet to pull it off, without alienating the Trumpty "base" in the process. That crowd is alive & well in the 2nd district, & he'll need it enthusiastically. Plus, Magaziner is no slouch. It'll be the most interesting race.

Are most Rhode Islanders in step with crushing inflation? Rampant crime and gun violence? Skyrocketing interest rates and gasoline prices? Could there possibly be a bigger albatross than the current Democratic leadership? Rhode Islanders might be smarter than you think. You'll just have to hope that they don't look in their wallets on the way to the polls. Or stop for gas. Or food. An astute Rhode Islander might even begin to wonder how they've done by their blind allegiance to Democrats. Stranger things have happened.

The Republican Party is radical and extremist? But not yours, right? Perception's a funny thing, isn't it?

Here’s a scenario for you. A somewhat stiff Rhode Island Democrat from a well-connected family is running for Congress after serving in statewide office and trying to get elected governor. He faces a popular Republican who’s been on the political scene long enough to define himself apart from the national GOP. The Democrat’s strategy: shift the focus from the Republican as an individual to the fact that he’d vote to put a GOP leader in charge on Capitol Hill. That précis sums up Sheldon Whitehouse’s successful 2006 campaign against Lincoln Chafee — and now Seth Magaziner is trying to run the same playbook against Allan Fung in 2022....But 2022 is not 2006. Whitehouse was running with the wind at his back, as President Bush’s unpopularity bolstered Democratic fortunes coast to coast. This time the White House occupant is a Democrat — and research by Fung supporter Steve Frias suggests Joe Biden is more unpopular in Rhode Island than any Democratic president in a midterm year in decades. And as Tim White points out, Whitehouse had the advantage of running statewide, while Magaziner is running in the more GOP-friendly of Rhode Island’s two congressional districts.

The Globe/Suffolk poll only added to the angst among some Democrats about what they view as the party’s squandered opportunity to gerrymander the 2nd District in their favor. General Assembly leaders only tweaked the lines between the two districts last year, rather trying to more aggressively shift some Democratic precincts from David Cicilline’s territory into the 2nd. That could now come back to bite the party by putting Allan Fung on more favorable terrain this fall — and it’s quite a contrast with the aggressively partisan map-drawing of Republican and Democratic leaders in many other states.

If it's not time for Democrats to start talking about real issues rather than a private citizen, a one term ex-president out of office for 2 years, than it's getting damn close. Seriously, how empty has this Party become? Good lord in heaven above, is this really our strategy for November, vote for me because I'm not Trump? Precisely how dumbed down has the Party of JFK become?

A question for the Borg Liberals if I may. In your unbridled haste to "paint" Mr. Fung as a "Trumper" and a "radical extremist" will there be even the slightest pause to consider the possibility that he may be the candidate most qualified to represent Rhode Island in Washington. Or how his views on the important issues of the day contrast with those of his opponent? I know, it's a lot of work, but is any less effort truly worthy of the Democracy bestowed upon us?

You talk about Trump like he's a ghost of some distant past. Of course, he's not. Is currently being a Trumpster a baseline litmus test? For many, yes. Only from there, can the policy issues discussions begin. However, some (most) "republicans" will try to have it both ways. Will Trump endorse Fung? Will Fung seek Trump's endorsement? Or more likely run from it. He has a tough dance which could be almost a comedy to watch.

Whereas Joe Biden's just a ghost.

But in all seriousness, what Lefties will seemingly never understand is that not only does the majority of the population not believe Big T is "a threat to democracy" (ya know, like carefully orchestrated show trials or threatening to dramatically alter American institutions to get your way, locking down citizens against their will) - but being a "Trumper" is directly tied to America First anti-globalist policies.

We love Trump, absolutely. But he will not be around forever.

He will always get credit for being the first to seriously wield the patriotic political power of MAGA - but it lives on without him. At the end of the day, he is but a human vessel.

MAGA policies are the real future - and that is what scares the bejesus out of the swamp creatures of both parties. Their special little club is being threatened. So they shout "racism!" and "insurrection!" to try and beat back the tide.

But it simply won't work. Couple that with the fact that the Dems have no charismatic leaders left and it means big changes are coming to the American landscape. It's not a question of if, only when. (In fact, some would argue it's already slowly beginning to happen.)

Will this tide reach as far out as Rhode Island?

We will know soon enough.
