I woudln't be too quick to say the economy is still declining in Rochester either...they released employment numbers today...and the Rochester area had the highest job gains last month.....since 2001. The unemployment rate dropped from 5% to 4.5% and there was an increase of 1700 jobs in march (not seasonal either, that's year over year month gain)

It's April 22nd and it's *FINALLY* spring here. We can now go outside in shorts and actually see the sun shining. Around March-April you start to doubting if it will ever be spring and when you might see more than a few hours of sun per day. The winters here can be a real downright depressing drag lasting 5-6 months.

I see it's 81 degrees in Rochester right now....the average temperature for July there.....not bad. That's a good 20 degrees above average for this time of the year.

I personally feel the winter is harsh. But I don't like snow much, so if you don't mind it you're fine. I'm originally not from here so I've been used to better winter seasons my whole life. Kodak's downsizing was a blow to the economy in a way and alot of people left. It is hard to find good paying jobs unless you are very, very qualified for a upper managemnt, corporate posiition. There are alot of good hospitals here and so, many people that live in the big houses and nice neighborhoods are in the medical profession. Also the financial profession. We have Paychex, a major employer, Paetec, and Xerox. Much of the city is crime ridden. Suburbia is nice, good schools, except for Greece area. We do have a very high property tax. I personally think that Western NY should be governed in that area completely different than the Eastern region as far as that's concerned. It's ridiculous. It doesn't coincide with the majority here is still middle class Americans, whom also are taxed to death on our hard earned paychecks in the first place! But that's another topic.....

a place you can work and actually still save for the future (due to the low cost of living - by USA and world standards it is a screeming bargin)
I'm sorry, but I really don't agree with this...but you know, I'm not someone with a degree and a high paying profession. So for people like me, it's a struggle sometimes here......I haven't found the screaming bargains yet, and believe me I've been on the lookout....lol....not trying to be a negative pompus.....just giving my opinion from my shoes. I understand that there are people who are better off than me also and so, they could have a totally different opinion on that but you have to agree, the property tax is OUTRAGEOUS!

Staying on the weather related topic. The summers in NY are generally great. I typically only have the whole-house AC on 3-14 days of the year. The rest of the time you just leave the windows open and at night it cools down enough to sleep. But the summer only lasts 2-3 months if you're lucky. The rest of the year is cold, gray, and gloomy.

Outside of San Diego I've yet to find paradise on earth weather wise. But nobody would likely choose Rochester based on weather criteria as it generally sucks in my opinion.

Regarding the weather in Rochester,New York. Winter lasts for 6 months starting in Nov-April. The worst month in winter hands down usually is Jan. Spring shows up about the latter part of May. I always tell every one that the seasons here are at least one month behind. Take hart though, the best summer weather begins in mid to latter part of June-Sept!! And just before the summer ends we get a bonus Indian summer Oct-begin November.

Regarding winter in Rochester count on a more than average snow fall(3-4 inches),but when there is a snow storm the snow fall is 5 inches or more. It can get cold(0-20 degrees farenheit). So bundle up and please what ever you do leave home at least 30 minutes before you normally do,because most Rochesterians do not know how to drive in the winter!! This winter season I saw record cars and SUV's in ditches!! Drive slow & use common sense!!
