"RO" is an abbreviation of Reverse Osmosis. RO filtration is a multi-step process that uses several different types of filters, one of which has extremely fine pores at a molecular level. It can remove almost every impurity from water...the resulting water isn't as pure as distilled water but what's left other than H20 is very small. Here's a description of this type of filtration system:

There are a number of different manufacturers and different systems, so cost varies. You need to figure in the capacity...whether you want water for the entire house filtered or just one faucet. How much reworking of the existing plumbing needs to be done. Whether you buy an off-the-shelf system and install it yourself or have one designed specifically for your house and get it installed professionally.

Different RO systems might include different "stages" that remove specific contaminants. 2, 3, 4, or more stages. The RO "membrane" is one stage. You could need a sediment pre-filter or you might not need one. What you want to remove from your specific water will affect all that. Once you install it, remember the filter cartridges don't last forever...they need to be replaced on different schedules. You have to buy them.

I have installed single faucet RO systems, not one that filters water for an entire house. IIRC single faucet systems I used averaged about $200 without installation, but they can cost a lot more. Don't know what the whole house systems cost. This blog might help explain:
