Hello everyone, great advice on this forum.

My wife is a resident at UCDMC so we need to close to it for the times she takes call (the closer the better, but ok to be within 10 miles or so). I will be starting a new job in May in Roseville. We are currently renting a house in Westlake in North Natomas and really like it (gated community, man-made lake, shopping malls). We are looking for the same in the new area; Some of the areas in between- Fair Oaks, Arden, Carmichael, etc. look promissing. Fair Oaks seems to be the nicest. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The neighborhoods around UCDMC are primarily older (circa 1890s-1920s) suburban neighborhoods, some very nice, like Elmhurst and East Sacramento, but none are gated communities with man-made lakes. If you work in Roseville and your wife works at UCDMC and you want a relative middle ground, I would suggest looking at Carmichael or the Campus Commons/Sierra Oaks area. That is primarily 1940s-1960s suburbs, so again, you won't find much in the way of recently-built gated communities nor man-made lakes. You might also look at places along La Riviera or American River Drive, or River Park, which flank the American River, a non-manmade waterway (aside from the manmade levees.) Again, these are postwar auto suburbs, not gated communities. They are relatively close to malls like Arden Fair or Country Club Center, and shopping centers like University Village. Fair Oaks is a bit farther out, if you want to be less than 10 miles away you will be somewhere between Fair Oaks and Carmichael, and the commute would either be via Fair Oaks Boulevard or through Rancho Cordova and Highway 50. Getting to Roseville from that direction will be a bit less convenient, probably via Fair Oaks to Sunrise Boulevard or via Watt to Interstate 80.
