Wait a minute. A couple people said they are retired but didn't mention their age. Retired, these days, could be anyone from age 45 and older. In any event, if you like a big city, NCDavid, you may like Portland or Salem more than smaller towns. Most (not all) young people like to be where there are more activities for their age group.

Well I have been retired since 2000, but I won't be 66 until the end of the month.

Well, there you go. It's a great age to be! I'm just a few years behind you, Steve.

There's nothing wrong with Salem. There is great shopping and the hospital is excellent.

It's right on the river, for floating and fishing. It is an easy day trip to the coast or for skiing. It's an easy drive into Portland if you want to go to the theater or night clubbing.

The weather is fine and the surrounding area in beautiful. Mountain hiking and boating are very close.

There is not a lot of night life. There are few neighborhoods that look low income (cheap), but I don't think they are particularly dangerous. Many neighborhoods have lovely big trees.

There can be a lot of traffic, but roads are well organized and it a very easy town to learn the road system.

It's not the place for people who want to party, party, party, but it is fine for people who want to hike, or ski, or fish.

Thanks, Larry and Steve. I'm 69 and retired too. Interesting that you are both retired, with opposite views of Salem: boring and not boring. Points out, I guess, that it depends on what you consider boring. I like to golf, hike and fly fish, eat at good ethnic restaurants. I see all of that in and around Salem, and if the city is "sleepy," that's probably okay with me. I'm not looking for excitement.
HereOnMars, I don't know where you got the idea I want a city with more to do at night. My original post said the opposite.
I wasn't asking for advice on where to relocate. I was asking why some folks don't like Salem, and I'm getting that from some of your posts. There are no correct answers, just opinions, which I was looking for and appreciate. I haven't read anything yet that makes Salem sound unattractive. To the contrary, it sounds like a nice mid-size city that would be a good fit for an active retiree like me.
Thanks to all.

Would it be okay for me to plead insanity? I'm so sorry, I misread your post. I had to go back and reread it, only to discover that yes, you did say it wasn't important. You know, this is what happens when I don't have a minimum of two cups of coffee in the morning. My attention level is zero. This will teach me not to post before noon.

Salem is a good place for any age, imo. I've only visited three times but enjoyed each time I've been there. And it isn't just the geography that makes it great. The people I met were very nice. Again, I wish you the best in your search.
