Hey guys.

My wife and I are considering a move to SLC. We've lived in Memphis (the pits) for 8 years and need to escape. We visited SLC in June 09; LOVED IT!

Biggest concern would be the winters there. How much black ice (if any) do you get? What are the worst areas for this silent menace? I know it snows alot....that I can deal with. It's the ice that worries me.

I appreciate any input you may have.

Rick

generally speaking, due to our rather efficient snow removal capabilities, in general, black ice is a threat most often in the very late evening through the very early morning hours. Otherwise there is usually enough traffic to take care of that in addition to the considerable amount of salt spray they apply to the roads to prevent it. If you're in a more rural area it's worse no doubt. You just need to be cautious when it's in the dead of winter and a storm has it like that, in which the roads can't be completely cleared and dried. That is the least of your problems I can assure you

Ditto, decisive.

Also, I wouldn't say that SL gets ALOT of snow. Probably coming from Memphis you would think so, but many times it will snow in the valley in the morning and by the afternoon, it has melted. The mountains do get a lot of snow. If you are planning on living on the benches or in Park City, you will certainly encounter more snow.

Welcome if you decide to make Utah your new home!

I spent 5 yrs in Oxford, going to Ole Miss. Our winters aren't NEAR as bad as yours! We do get balck ice as others have mentioned, but not very often. And no ice storms like hit Arkansas, Tn, and northern MS. I had my entire yard covered with ice one year, every blade of grass, every twig had it's own shell. Beautiful but treacherous. I was stuck in the house for 2 days until it melted.

The only way we get black ice is when the snow metls in the heat of the day and then re-freezes at night. But it melts as soon as the day hets up again.

This is a whole other place in terms of culture. I love the climate, it's the greatest to me! It may get to 100 degrees in the summer but then the humidity is 10%. People are generally friendly and helpful to one another. Little crime as compared to Memphis, although it exists. Good luck!

Hah ...
Black Ice ....

Just drive a bit slower than anybody else, and then just drive between all those off road cars that line the road, and show you where not to drive .....

Come to think of it, that expression should be *off THE road*.

Geesj some of the freeways with an icy condition,
look like lighted up runways ...

Appreciate the input guys. Hoping to visit again in the winter before I decide on the big move. One more thing: Any chance of SLC getting an NFL team?

The last time the NFL TEAM OWNERS met in Memphis to consider bringing a team there, they were greeted with a giant FIRE HYDRANT on the stage. I believe the proposed name of the team was the Memphis Hound Dogs. They laughed their ***es off as they left the room. I hope one day SLC actually gets a team of their own. That would rock!

You'll find black ice on the freeways on overpasses more than anywhere else. Because of the airflow under the road, the water tends to freeze up after sundown when the temperatures drop after having warmed up a bit in the daytime. It's honestly not a huge problem. It's nowhere near like the ice resulting from ice storms in some parts of the country.

My Mother lives in Memphis and aside from a few things... YUCK! The crime is awful! Anyway regarding the NFL team. From what I hear, if you like football, you'll have to be content with college. Some like that better anyway!
