San Antonio Tamales vs New Orleans Tamales (El Paso, Seguin: buying, eat)

Just came from a visit from the Big Easy and tried the tamales there. The tamales were lightyears better than any tamale I ever eaten in San Antonio.

Thats a pretty general statement. Everybody makes tamales differently. I had great tamales in Tulsa, OK before but that doesn't mean they are better there than San Antonio.

San Antonio tamales are tiny compared to tamales in El Paso, TX or New Mexico.

I think the most ginormous tamales I'd ever seen were in California, but they put vegetables in their tamales. That was teh yuk, IMO! The best I ever had were homemade tamales when I was in a colonia in Mexico. Tamales Veracurzanas is what they were called...huge and sooooo good. YUM!

My mom makes homemade tamales that are terrific! When I was younger she used to make dessert tamales with raisins that were yummy.

Has anyone ever had the tamales they make with Banana leaves?

I want to say that the ladies in the colonia made their tamales with banana leaves, but can't say for certain.

As for the raisin tamales...when can I pick up an order?

Banana leaves are commonly used in Central America and more southern parts of Mexico. The leaves themselves don't make that much difference, it's the style of the tamale, reflecting the region.

My favourite tamales are of course my mom's (originating in the Sonora-AZ border region). No tamales in SA come close, except the ones I bought from a woman walking down the street in my 'hood one Christmas. They're made with shredded pork. No veg, no cheese, no beans (yuk!). But of course we all like what we considered our first love.

That said, I had tamales made in Seguin in banana leaves which were out of this world.

Shredded pork isn't unusual in SA. As a matter of fact, it's the norm. I'd be leery of buying tamales from someone walking down the street. Heaven only knows what kind of bacteria could be festering!

I've never in my life seen or had a tamale with cheese! Bean/jalapeno tamales are good, though.
