Default Crime

I am one of the last 3 natives ( and the crime statistics are very relative to who issued them, when they were done and what that particular set of numbers was intended for. San Antonio is a safe, fun and progressive city that has huge family friendly events that draw crowds in excess of 250-300,000 easy with minimal incidents. That rape statistic is appalling by any measure but I hardly see how a number like that would escape the notice of our local press. So something is amiss in all respect. Yes, if you go to the deep poverty area crime is higher for violent crime and burglary in affluent areas is a tad higher than non affluent( Why go burgle your neighbor if your both broke?) The local police are fair, they enforce the laws and they jump on bad trends as they start. 100% Perfect ? No. But all major cities have become more complex and yes there are more creeps out there. I have been here since birth which was before there was a LOOP 410 ! Before Hemisphere and before the Medical Center was around. The worst issue facing this city is highway congestion and water. Having said all of that- We would like to welcome you to the city as we always welcome thoughtful sincere people who have the foresight to ask questions in regards to their family safety ahead of time. Just my 2bits....

Bottom line, the crime in SA is way better than in Houston and I can definitely assure the OP that SA is more than a suitable substitute for Baltimore.
i know, right? a few of my inlaws have their trucks and cars broken into regularly, even though it was in different areas and they don't live in "bad side of town". even back in my home town, with its ridiculously low crime stats, my brother's car got broken into on more than one occasion. some cars are targets (civics, for example), some situations lend itself to being more likely to be burglarized (stuff in your car, parked in an area obscured from eyes) and sometimes it's just not your lucky day.

i've never been to houston or baltimore, but as a young single female who lived, worked and took night classes in oakland with no problems what so ever, sa is /not that bad/. which isn't to say everything is hunkydory and it's ok to not be conscientious about your personal safety. but you are more likely to have a drunk ******* on a cellphone run you off the road then a guy try to car jack you the moment you drive into san antonio.

there are actually decent areas in SA, mainly the 78209 zip code, 78251 as well. some really, really nice properties going up in 78251 where one of my clients lives.

anything else and youre taking a big chance. as always, avoid the south (if you go far enough, south isnt bad in the hill country), east and west sides, stick to central (downtown), the NE and some pockets of the NW side (avoid medical center at all costs) and youll be good.

youd be quite surprised at what deals you can find in AH if you just drive around and look. sadly (or maybe not?) my situation has changed and the missus and i are moving out of AH and out to the hill country.

doesnt help that our LL is being a total d-bag, but thats another thread...

/good thing is our lease is up in a few months anyways!

Good save and yeah, Alamo Heights > Medical Center, but is Medical Center really that bad?

Also are the apartments you got in Alamo Heights or off of Broadway and 410? Big difference even if in 09.

it used to be decent back in 03. when i first arrived in Sa, it was pretty darn quiet (cept during lunch and rush hour). now, data point (a street i had to take every day to work) has cop cars going up and down it all hours of the night. the data point food mart (really nice indian couple was managing it.. idk if they are now) was targeted by racists and criminals trying to rip their ATM out with a truck and the front door was shot up once.

its terrible in medical center now. really a shame since it used to be nice.

im off broadway, about a mile off the hildebrand/broadway intersection.
