Unless something has changed in recent years, the manufacturer is required to equip all new vehicles shipped to the State, with a provision for mounting a front plate.

Of course, that wouldn't apply to used cars, that were previously registered in another State, that did not require a front plate.

And then ticket you for the plate, when they don't find anything else.

The time I got a ticket for front license plate, I was going to the park to eat lunch and I looked too young to be out on a school day.

I never had one on the front of my truck and never paid attention to it, until i took a trip to Laredo about 4 years ago. I was heading to a funeral, just going for the day, nothing else in the car but my wife. We were wearing formal attire (suit and tie, etc). I got stopped 3 times all for the same thing, no front license. Here's what i learned. There is a teaming auto theft industry in south texas and many of those stolen trucks are headed to mexico. theives discard the existing plate(s) and steal a new license plate but they usually don't put one on the front, so this is flag to law enforcement. Each stop was longer and had more questions than the next with the final stop about 20 miles outside Laredo. This time they made me stand in a field (my wife stay in the car) while they checked everything. Mind you it didn't matter to the 2nd and third officers to stop me that I had a citation from the first stop. I now have a front license plate on all my cars regardless.

I broke my front licence plate mount in a parking lot. I picked up the pieces and put them on the floor of the passenger side. On my way home a cop pulled me over and searched my car. He found the the broken front licence plate mount and asked me about it. I told him I broke it when I bumped into one of those concrete poles in the parking lot. He said "OH Sure!" I said "NO Really." He just wrote me a warning.

My totally law-abiding sweetie pie friend was pulled over ONLY for the front plate thing by a state trooper.

That being said, no. Just no.

Well, what I meant by saying he will "check you out," I meant that gave him an opportunity to run your DL # to see if you have any outstanding warrants or if you have alcohol on your breath.

I drove around without a front license plate for almost two years (and drove lots of areas where there were police left and right). Never got pulled over. I was constantly worried and won't tempt fate with another car, but I really think it's being in the rigt place at the right time when law enforcement is enforcing the rule.

Most likely you were stopped for completely different reason, and the missing front plate was just an excuse.
Remember all that occurred near the border. Maybe a truck similar to yours was reported?

Searched your car??? Did he had a warrant???
Missing front plate isn't a reason to search a car...
The Fourth Amendment's protection against unlawful search and seizure generally makes arbitrary police car searches illegal.

When can police search your car? Generally, under the following circumstances:
- You have given the officer consent
- The officer has probable cause to believe there is evidence of a crime in your vehicle
- The officer reasonably believes a search is necessary for their own protection (a hidden weapon, for example)
- You have been arrested and the search is related to that arrest (such as a search for illegal drugs)

Tiredandretired probably just gave consent and may not have remembered. Officers always use circuitous wording to get people to give consent. "You don't mind if I search your car for your own safety, Sir/Ma'am"?

Disgusting!
